We had the good fortune of connecting with Tatyana Penn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tatyana, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
The best habit I’ve picked up is movement. Meaning that I keep moving, regardless of the weapons formed against me. Learning that my words are my poetry, and in all things I am art, guided me into showing more of my true purpose. I stopped allowing the world to dictate my importance & let God make my next move.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The funniest thing about my art is that it took me a long time to realize what my art was. When you hear the word “ART” you immediately think of a painting or a drawing or maybe a video but you never take into consideration to what art really can be. Learning myself and what I wanted to produce to the world made me realize that in all, I am art. My poetry is more than just words, it’s a movement in it’s entirety. I feel like my story is really just getting to know myself outside of these pages that I write, outside of these videos that I record. I’ve always been the shy girl that did not speak highly of herself nor felt like I brought attention to the room but learning that my words are more than just engraved on paper made that a little more clear. Although I put myself in the spotlight a lot more often now, I still struggle with standing faithfully on what I’ve been taught nevertheless I always remind myself that “if it ain’t me then who will?” Simply put, if I wasn’t post to be doing this, I wouldn’t be doing so well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well I LOVE to eat and finding new food places is one of my past time. I can definitely say that One of my favorite places to eat has to be
1-800 Lucky located in Wynwood. I love The food and the overall aesthetic of the Restaurant. If they weren’t up for that, I’d definitely go to North Miami Beach to get some great Griot and plantains or we could even head downtown for some El Primo Taco. We could even check out one of the MANY beaches we have here in south Florida. The amount of activities here, are really endless.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my journey to God & my mother. Coming from a single-parent home, there isn’t much of a headline but just that. Nevertheless, My mother made it clear at a young age, I’m more than what the world thinks of me. With my faith in God and my Mother’s encouraging words, I always knew I had a better purpose and that is why I decided to follow my dreams. Not only for me, but for those who feel they can’t.
