We had the good fortune of connecting with Tavasha Ancrum and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tavasha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was having the freedom to make my own schedule and paving the way for my children to inherit wealth. I’m a mom of two boys but when I first started my business I only had my oldest son and I knew the life I wanted to provide for him was not going to come from working someone else’s business. So I decided to take what I love and what I was already doing, which was braiding hair, and capitalize off of it.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is solely based upon making everyone who sits in my chair feel good about themselves. Hint the name “Esteem By Vash”. There’s no better feeling knowing you look good which plays a major part in making you feel good. I feel like what sets me apart from some is me believing in quality over quantity. I mean everyone wants the followers, the likes, the clients, the money etc., and of course while all of that is great, I strongly believe in adding value to people’s lives not just getting them in and out of the chair then on to next. I actually enjoy building bonds with my clients outside of being just their “hairstylist”. I am proud of how far I’ve come as a braider in the industry. I’m still working towards where I actually want to be but I’ve also came such a long way. At times I would get discouraged if I felt like my business wasn’t going how I planned it to go but I had to realize God is in full control of my life and great things sometimes take time. So I’m always trusting in God’s perfect timing. However, prayer is the first tool I use to overcome the challenges. Talking to God will do it every single time. I’ve also learned, as cliche as it sounds, consistency is the major key. This was a huge struggle for me and I believe thats what held me back from alot of growth, but these days I’m seeing the progress because of it. I want people to know how my walk with God has had a huge impact on me as a business woman and I’m excited about where its gonna take me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them to church. Being who I am we gonna get spiritually fed before anything okay lol. But being that I’m such a homebody and barely go oit as is, unless its kid friendly, we’d probably do the beach. I mean what can I say it’s South Florida, who doesn’t like a good beach date? There’s the watercto enjoy as well as a strip full of restaurants and stores depending on the beach you choose. We’d do watersports for sure. I’m a huge movie person so we’ll definitely go to a theater. Food is also a love language for me so we’ll choose different restaurants to try whether it’s be brunch, lunch or dinner.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to most definitely take the time to shouout my mom. She has been by my side from day one. Literally. During my childhood she actually did hair full time so now that she has practically passed the baton to me she is always there to encourage, uplift, and pray for me. And something that stands out that she always tend to tell me is that I’m gonna go further in the hair industry and do better than she did. There’s nothing like a great support system. My mom is mine.
