We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Walker Sinning and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I am the person who always had a backup plan for the backup plan. After college, I entered the workforce as a professional dancer. Dance afforded me a full scholarship to college, the opportunity to travel the world , dance on the MTV VMA’s , SNL and back up for artists like Pitbull and Taylor Swift.
With that said, I also understood that my dance career would come to an end and I made sure to set myself up for the long-term. I aquired a Master’s Degree on K-12 Physical Education. After teaching for a couple of years, my now husband proposed and I left the world of teaching and my life in New York to move to Portland.
It was a risk to leave security and a pension at a time when teaching jobs were scarce, but I did it anyway and the risk paid off! Over the course of a few years I worked my way into the world of fitness modeling, began to acquire certifications in fitness and nutrition and launched TaylorWalkerFit.com.
Blogging was still a relatively new career and Instagram was just starting to blow up. Slowly, but surely, with time and consistency the clients came. Taking the risk of leaving security was scary, but I have now built a life and a career I can take with me no matter where I go.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As I stated previously, I was a professional dancer and physical education teacher before I made the decision to leave teaching and follow my fiancé from New York to Oregon. Was it scary? Yes! I had tenure and a pension, but I also had a nagging suspicion that there was more on the horizon. I followed my gut and the universe provided an opportunity that would change the trajectory of my career. Wilhelmina Models was hosting a nationwide fitness model search. I thought it was silly, but before I knew it, I was flying to New York as a finalist and beat out 3,000 applicants to sign my first big agency contract.
Working as a fitness model was a full-time job. I also wanted to have longevity and be able to contribute to video, instruction or print. Because of that, and with agency guidance, I decided to begin my side-business is health and fitness. I launched my blog, TaylorWalkerFit.com as a place to showcase my journey to healthy living and I acquired certifications in Barre and Nutrition. My motto at the time was: “Eat the burger. Do the sit-ups and live the happy, healthy life you love and deserve.” Then and now, my brand is all about being transparent and a realistic approach to eating a fitness. I want to inspire, but I am also not afraid to show the nitty gritty, vulnerable side of our lives. I think that is what really resonates with people.
As my life unfolded on social media over the past seven years, I have transitioned from wife and model on the go, to wife, model and mom of two on the go. After two pregnancies and unmedicated HypnoBirthings, I have found my calling. The Pre/postnatal and birthing space. There is such a lack of education and support in our society that I want to connect the dots for all women. I have acquired certifications as a pre/postnatal CES, Diastasis and Core Consultant, HypnoBirthing Educator and Doula.
As a constantly evolving woman, in a constantly evolving world, I made a promise to myself a long time ago and that is to always stay true to myself. If that means passing on a high paying campaign because it doesn’t align with my brand, so be it. It has not always been easy, I posted for a full year before earning a signing paid brand collaboration. I have learned that if you work with quality and consistency the money will follow. You can build the life that you desire, you just have to work for it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
At this point in my life, I am all about eat, play, sweat! We would go to Barry’s, Sweat Studio or dance with Ashli Katz, dine at Makoto in the Bal harbor Shops and Spa at the Eden Roc. A day at Soho House by the pool or a summer day in and out of the ocean rivals would rival any tropical vacation around the world. Pre dinner drinks in the 1hotel lobby and live music at the Faena would be the best people watching or girls night following a poolside jaunt at the Good Time Hotel. And yes, Carbone is worth the advanced reservation! For healthy eats, Pura Vida, OTL or Miami Squeeze are can’t miss!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It sounds cliche, but I would love to give a shoutout to my husband! If he hadn’t chased his own career from coast to coast, I would not have had the motivation to build something of my own. I am sure I would have loved being an educator in a school system, but my life is now so full physically, mentally and creatively. I am still educating, but I have flexibility and I can also be there for my kids when they need me. In a sense, I get the best of both worlds as a working mother.
