We had the good fortune of connecting with TC Silk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi TC, why did you pursue a creative career?
I am pursuing an artistic career because I feel as though it allows me to do everything I love to do at once. I love making music, but I also love marketing, photography, and videography. As a musician, I get to be the captain of my own ship and make my own decisions, and it feels very liberating after working in corporate. Finally, I am able to express everything that I want to express and be the one who approves it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve been making music in some way or form my whole life, and I think that this new material is like the perfect culmination of everything I have ever learned. The genre that I’m working in is definitely hip-hop, but I am deeply influenced by reggae, rocksteady, dancehall, punk, 60’s rock, orchestral, and jazz music, and I hope it shows in my songs! My craft is extremely personal — I make all my beats, write all my lyrics, and I am heavily invested in the visual branding, and I’m really proud of every song that I make because I know it’s my baby!

Getting to where I am today, which is only a stop on the road to where I actually want to be, has not been exactly easy, but I think only because I have gotten in my own way so many times. I think I’ve always been someone with potential and talent, but growing up in an era where it was kind of cool to be aloof and making a lot of bad (but fun) decisions when I was younger kind of took me off the road. As I saw others winning and I was staying the same, I basically gave up on music to start working the career and day job I’m in now, but I never satisfied, and it took a while for me to realize that I need to take my self seriously. I have to say I’m the happiest I’ve ever been right now as I try and chase this goal, and I think that’s the lesson I’ve learned along the way — it’s important to have a purpose and to believe in it fully.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Damn first things first we would go to West Palm Wine Co to stock up on some delicious natural wine for the week. After that, we’d go to Napoleon Bakery and get some jamon iberico sandwiches and whatever other goodies they felt like grabbing. We’d probably go back to my place in Riviera Beach to settle down and chill in the backyard for a bit until the evening comes, where we’d go to the French Grill House in Northwood and destroy a giant steak cut into strips that the whole table can enjoy while drinking the wine we bought earlier. Once dinner’s over, we’d head down the street to Petanque which has the sickest, most authentic reggae night I’ve ever seen in Florida (the band is actually Jamaican). The hours would fly by because we’re drinking mezcal and soda.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shout out to growing up in Palm Beach County! Being surrounded by so many different people from different backgrounds had a huge impact on the way I look at the world. The schools I attended thanks to living here created an amazing musical, artistic, and social foundation that I’ve carried with me for my entire life. My music teachers Mr. Cleve Maloon and the late great Mr. Wayne Miller truly taught me everything I know about understanding and interpreting music, as well as the value of practicing, fundamentals, and listening properly.

I am thankful for my family and friends, my girlfriend Dania especially who has taught me a new way to look at the world that I’ve never imagined. I feel like I can do anything thanks to the support of her and everyone around me. My friend Jordan Pettingill was one of the first people to reach out to me when I started making music again, and he immediately gave me a place to perform and has invested so much of his own time and resources into my project. He’s now touring with me as a DJ and does amazing background vocals.

I could go on and on but really I’m just super thankful for everyone that I have ever met in my life! It feels good to be in your hometown and people don’t hate you!
