We had the good fortune of connecting with Teresa Korber and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Teresa, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
The pandemic really prompted me to make major changes in my work and personal life.
Prior to this, my 9-5 took precedence and this really impacted my mental and emotional health. Because of this, at that time, I rarely created art.
After a pandemic layoff, I prioritized my needs, focusing on health and creative fulfillment. Reprioritizing my life to include more joy and purpose has improved my life drastically but especially as an artist. It gave me the mental space that I needed to paint again.
All right, so let’s move on to what keeps you busy professionally? Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, and what you are most proud of or excited about.
Professionally, I think what sets me apart from some other artists is my emotional attachment to my work. It is difficult for me to create work that I don’t personally deeply care about.
How did you get to where you are today professionally? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
Both my parents are artists, so art has always been a part of my life. I knew how challenging a creative life could be at a very early age because I experienced those hardships through my parents. I knew early on that an artist’s life was definitely not an easy life.
I don’t think you overcome the challenges; you just must keep going. Living a creative life is hard, yes, but anything worth doing is.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
Well, one of the great things about living a creative life is that you are constantly growing as a person, and an artist, and learning every single day.
There are so many lessons but here are a few that I’ve learned along the way:
-Be humble.
-Be kind.
-Help others.
-Take risks.
-No job or amount of money is worth your health.
-Never settle for mediocrity both in life and in your work.
-Know your worth and if you don’t, then practice knowing your worth.
-Do what makes you happy.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
To put it simply, my desire is that when people view my art they see and feel my heart and in turn see and feel their own.
I work on trying to close the gap more and more on how effectively and directly this translates from canvas to viewer.
It’s not about building a brand. It’s about connecting with viewers in a deeply personal and intimate way. This part is serious business for me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, of course, our first stop would be Miami. That’s where I was born. But I think you need more than a week to explore that simply because it is so rich and culture and things to do!
The second place I would take them to is Delray Beach. One of my favorite places to eat is DaDa Restaurant. The atmosphere is artsy and eclectic, the food is amazing, and the drinks are worth the trip. I’ve also done a lot of the artwork both inside and outside of the restaurant.
This would be followed by a visit to the Morikami Japanese Museum and Gardens for a little Zen and relaxation walk.
After that we’d head over to downtown West Palm Beach. The Artist Community there is continuously growing and there are lots of great bars and restaurants. One of my favorite local places is called Hullaballoo on Clematis St. It’s another great spot for food and drinks, and sometimes a little karaoke.
And of course, we’d have to visit the Norton Museum of Art to view a current exhibit.
Lastly, I’d end the week by Hiking one of the many Florida Trails we have here to offer. (Weather permitting)
