We had the good fortune of connecting with Terrence McGee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Terrence, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always thought I had a unique view on life and art. I have always been creative and wanted to show the world what I could do and what I saw through my lens .The Perspective Eye was a name I created from a philosophical way of thinking as an Artist. I was thinking of just viewing art from different perspectives and apply that to life. The name itself and its abbreviation plays with perspective on how you can see it. P.E.Y.E. is the acronym spelling out to be Purposely Elevate Your Existence. The Perspective E.Y.E when you see it. Even the main logo is a scorpion that looks like a P with an eyeball and camera lens, so truly it is all about creative perspective. It all leads to why I started my business of Photography/Clothing/Art called The Perspective Eye.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is like an inspiring perspective. It starts with my mind and creativity. I have ideas that sometime I can’t put into words, or even create. I look to find the tools to use to make what goes on in my mind a reality. I use a camera, paintbrush, microphone, music instruments, pen, and anything that will allow me to channel that idea or allow me to be creative. I started off a singer/musician. I’ve always loved singing and performing R&B soul music. It gave me a special feeling inside that I couldn’t get anywhere else. I still chase that feeling till this day. I would say I came up kind of lost. I knew that I was creative, cause I was singing in chorus, playing in the band, painting and drawing in art class, but I didn’t know where to go with any of it. I didn’t know what I could do with any of these things. I was dealing with enough at home, I was just trying to survive and make it to the next level. My mother told me college was the way out/next level. I went to college and picked up a camera. I fell in love with being able to show my perspective through a lens, and added it to my list of tools to help me express my view. My road wasn’t easy. I had good friends, but back then that was it. I learned that friends were very important in life. I was alone inside because not having a mother or grandmother to talk to and ask for guidance took a toll. I had to learn a lot of things the hard way, but it taught me a lot in this life. I overcame this challenge by being the most positive creature on earth. I stayed strong and positive, and decided to not care too much about a lot of things. This combination made life a little bit easier to deal with. I’ve learned and still learning lessons everyday, but some important lessons are to stay positive, believe in yourself, nurture your friendships, work hard/practice, and take time seriously. I want the world to know that creativity is the way! I want people to PURPOSELY ELEVATE YOUR EXISTENCE.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friends were visiting for a week we would start off with an early breakfast place. I’ve never had “Bacon B****,” so we could try that Monday morning. Then I would take them to the Art District Wynwood. We would walk around and maybe go bar hopping, then end up at Grails the sneakerhead bar/lounge. Sounds like a solid Monday. Tuesday is good day to make breakfast at the house. For the majority of the day I would get a group of friends together to go play basketball. After a long day of hooping we all meet back to just kick it at the house and drink, make tacos, and play games. Wednesday would be a good day to go paintballing, then go out Komodo or Key Club for Dinner. Thursday is for the rooftop bars/restaurants to get a good view and taste of the city. Friday we can get brunch with friends and go to a game depending on the season. After the game we can go out in Brickell. Saturday we all will relax and chill at the beach for balance. We will probably go to club later that night, maybe Story, Space, or somewhere like that. Sunday is probably going to be a late start so just hang out until “LIV on Sunday.”
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my wife Tracey for having my back and inspire me to keep going. I would also like to shout out my group of friends that I have been friends with since middle school. Shout out to Aaron, Darius, Matt, Cassie, Rashad, and Termaine. We all keep each other in check and remind each other to keep pushing. Also the parental figures that really had my back in my youth to help me move along in life. Shout out to my late mother Terry McGee, she laid down the blueprint of what she wanted for me and taught me to be a man. Shout out to my brother Bernard McGee, Aunt Jackie, Tutu, Mary Scott, Valencia, Frannie & Kev, The Walton Family, Mrs April & Duane (my father) and every family member that helped me along the way. I can’t forget my Art Teacher that started my artistic Journey, Mrs. Durham from Chatham High School, Virginia.
