We had the good fortune of connecting with The Picnic Darlings and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi The Picnic Darlings, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
We wanted something more fulfilling outside of our 9-5’s. We both worked for corporate America (Elea in logisitics for a big cruise line and myself in marketing for a national homebuilder) and during the height of the pandemic, with all the time being spent at home, we were both longing for something more than our current jobs. A passion project of sorts.
Both of our mothers are successful entreprenuers and we inherited the hustle mindset so it was only natural for us to start a business.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The Picnic Darlings is a luxury picnic planning company offering pop up picnics throughout Miami and Broward. We love that we provide a unique experience for our customers that forms the basis for special memories – whether it be a birthday, girls brunch, or even a proposal, The Picnic Darlings plays a role in these special moments.
We have been extremely lucky in our journey to where we are today. Aside from our passion for what we do, the amount of support from family, friends and other local small businesses has helped us tremendously in our success. We firmly believe in helping bring others up along the way so any chance we get we partner with or support other small female owned businesses because there truly is a special power in community.
Our biggest challenges have been learning to run a business. Having corporate backgrounds has definitely helped us but it’s a whole other world when it’s your business. We are self taught in accounting, web design, transportation and more! Our drive is what gets us through the hiccups along the way and we view everything as an opportunity to learn rather than a setback.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Little Havana to start! Everyone hears Miami and thinks “South Beach” but the foundation of Miami is the Cuban culture and where better to get someone immersed in the culture than spending some time in Little Havana? From lunch along Calle Ocho to a night out at Ball and Chain, there is so much to do. Next stop would also be the museums – PAMM and Frost Science. Architecurally the space is one to see in person but there is so much to see and learn under one roof!
Some eating spots to go to would be Mandolin in Buenavista, Uchi and KYU in Wynwood and even Planta in Coconutgrove. If they are looking for some staple spots around the city, you can’t miss out on Casola’s for the biggest and yummiest slice of New York style pizza you will have in South FL.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This might seem a little unconventional but we would like to dedicate this shout out to “strong female friendship”, more specifically “best friendships”. Our friendship has gotten us through the toughest of times and in that strength it has motivated us and encouraged us to not only start a business together but perfectly balancing each other out has helped us succeed in many aspects of the business from planning and logistics to marketing. We know and respect our individual strengths and roles with The Picnic Darlings.
Additionally, having a mutual understanding that friendship is above everything else has definitely helped maintain the passion within ourselves for the business.
