We had the good fortune of connecting with The Wax Worms The Wax Worms and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi The Wax Worms, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
The following is the band’s transcribed response to the question, “What makes you happy? Why?”, asked by their singer, Max Harrison:
Max H: Playing music with my friends and serving my community!
Caleb: What makes me happy? P****! (Laughs) I love p**** because that s*** dank.
Max T: [Max] make[s] me happy. Because we have the same name.
Wyatt: Come back to me.
Ryan: I can’t say.
Ale: Nothing really makes me happy now.
(Everyone laughs)
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Max H: I started writing a lot of new songs during my freshman year of college and sharing them with close friends. Those friends told me I should do something with them, so I made an Instagram and a Soundcloud account for the new project, and uploaded two demos – “Ahh” and “Lovely Zadie”. Then, I started going to the Churchill’s Pub Monday night open mic every week for like two or three months to look for band members since most of my musical friends were away at college. Once I found members and started gigging, the next 4 years were just a long odyssey of trying to record an EP. I’ll admit, though, that a lot of that time was me obsessing over minuscule things that I thought would make the EP perfect, instead of accepting that it’s meant to be a demo. After that was just grinding on our recording game during the pandemic, which helped us put out a music video and three singles – “No Sugar”, “Lone With You”, and our most recent one, “Laura”. Definitely would not say all of this was easy, but every obstacle we faced taught us something new about how we like to operate. And, the fact that we’ve kept going every time we hit a new low has given us a lot self-confidence in our path through this super weird industry. Which is good because we’ve got a long road ahead of us.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
WW: Gramps. Dante’s HIFi. Ryan’s house. Wyatt’s house. Technique Records. Lagniappe. Paradis. Yesterday and Today Records. Red White and Blue Thrift Store. Night Owl Drive-In. Over/Under on a Wednesday for karaoke, drinks, and gator bites. Beach beach beach.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
WW: Ryan’s parents for hosting every practice for years and for coming to every show since the beginning. They’re our biggest fans. All of the past members of the band for the times we had. Coltrane McKendrick for engineering the first EP. Chris Hurst for producing our first EP, Theo Braun for mixing and mastering “No Sugar”. Max Trullenque for booking our first gig. Frankie Trullenque for helping us find a home for our studio (and ourselves). Lucian Carr for putting up with endless jamming. Laura Rosado for the constant support.
