We had the good fortune of connecting with Tim Travis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tim, how does your business help the community?
Good afternoon At Blue Dragon Artwork, we have the privilege of catering to discerning customers and collectors who seek artistic expression that goes beyond the ordinary… Our handcrafted furniture pieces are crafted to provide them with an unparalleled sense of creativity and individuality. When we do Home Shows our booth is always full of all ages, shapes and colors, just walking around in amazement and doing live feeds or posting to their IG or FB accounts…. I kind of think it hits a spot in the subconscious where they can revert back to being a kid again. Remember that time, when we were free and anything was possible? No worries, no deadlines, just be home before the street lights came on… What truly makes our work special is our dedication to the environment! Many of our pieces incorporate repurposed materials, accounting for approximately 80% of our creations. While the specific ratio may vary from piece to piece, we are dedicated to embracing the beauty and potential of repurposing in a significant portion of our designs. This allows us to showcase the stunning possibilities of recycling and repurposing. We recognize that discussions about the environment can often feel distant and disconnected, but when people interact with our pieces, they witness the transformative power of sustainability firsthand. It’s an incredible feeling to be able to bridge the gap between artistry and environmental awareness, inspiring others to appreciate the beauty of our world while enjoying one-of-a-kind furniture.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always been making crazy full themed bedrooms or other wild forts and clubhouses for my kids, etc. Also I have been asked to make custom pieces for people that had heard of the things I do. Remember now, this was way before everyone with all these computerized machines to cut and sand, etc. As a matter of fact I still make all of the pieces the same way as before, you won’t see any CNC or other type of hack at my studio. I mean they take all of the personality and art out of manipulation wood and other materials. Now, I go to the studio to unplug from my regular job which is working on high voltage lines on the top of the poles that feed the neighborhoods, etc. As a matter of fact Ive had a couple years where I have had to tell the customer that their piece was delayed a bit because I was off restoring power after a natural disaster…
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love going down to Wynwood Walls in Miami or anywhere there is true art happening… I also like to go to the theme parks because I think, that’s where my twisted mindset as far as designing outrageous cool pieces started.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I guess I’d like to give a shout out to the family… To my dad that taught me how to build a house from the ground up as well as a strong work ethic. My mom who was an amazing painter and rarely ever was seen without a smile or her trademark laugh. My son who is learning how to do some of the things that were passed down. As a matter of fact, he has a design currently getting quite a bit of attention. Lastly my daughter Trinity. She got her grandmothers talent and helps this colorblind artist with better color choices sometimes and does some of the finer detailed painting.
