Meet Timothy Kim | Wedding Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Timothy Kim and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Timothy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My journey as a photographer started with a job photographing products and models for a fashion company. However, it was not until I joined a wedding photography studio that I discovered my passion for capturing the essence of weddings.

The range of emotions that surfaced throughout the wedding day fascinated me. I was thrilled to capture all the emotions and showcase my creativity on the wedding day. Unfortunately, the studio’s transparent vision and approach to photography limited my creativity. All the photographers seemed to take the same photos for each client – a cookie-cutter approach that left no room for uniqueness or individuality. It was disheartening to see that the clients’ special day was treated as just another event.

Driven by my passion for photography, I decided to start my own business. I wanted to break free from the constraints of the studio and capture my clients’ weddings with a fresh perspective. Each wedding was unique – a reflection of the couple’s personality, love, and commitment to each other. I wanted to capture these details with creativity, so my clients could relive their special day with joy and wonder.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I am a wedding photographer. I try to set myself apart from others by connecting with my clients in a unique way where I can be their friend when they need help during the day or even during their wedding preparation. I try to create a unique set of images for them where they can look back and remember the emotions they felt during that moment. Most of all, I try to capture and document their feelings and the emotions of everyone present to celebrate with them.

It was not an easy journey to get to where I am currently. There were many times when I thought my photos were not good enough and thought about quitting, as I am very critical of myself. Whenever I felt doubtful about my photography skills, my coworkers always stepped in to provide me with constructive feedback. They would compliment me on the aspects of my work that they appreciated and then offer specific suggestions for how I could enhance my techniques and produce even better results. This feedback was incredibly valuable to me, as it not only helped me to grow as a photographer but also gave me the confidence to keep pursuing my passion.

Through my experiences in this field, I’ve come to understand that the path to success requires a humble and receptive attitude toward learning. Embracing new ideas and feedback is not only essential for growth, but it also serves as a driving force towards excellence. With a mindset of continuous improvement, we can keep moving towards the goal we all have.

It fills my heart with immense gratitude to acknowledge how much God, my mother, and my friends have contributed to my success despite the numerous challenges I faced throughout my career. I cannot thank them enough for standing by me during my lowest moments, especially during the pandemic. Their unwavering support, encouragement, and motivation have been instrumental in helping me overcome obstacles and reach where I am today. From offering a listening ear to providing advice, or simply being there with a kind word, they have given me hope and strength when I needed it the most. I am deeply indebted to them and will always cherish their invaluable contributions to my journey.
