We had the good fortune of connecting with Tori Torres and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tori, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my first company out of necessity. I was a young single, divorced Mom of 2 boys in a terrible situation. I had to think quickly to maintain my independence and get back on my feet after an awful divorce. I knew there were things I was good at – Influence, Creativity, and I had the Hustle and drive of an army inside of me! I used MySpace initially to drive sales and bring interest to my brand. Before you know it, I was designing for the likes of Paris Hilton, Khloe Kardashian, DVF, Beyonce, and a whole host of celebrity clients. All from the need to recover from a bad situation and make sure that my boys had a great start to their lives!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I now run a million plus follower brand, ThePoshGirlsClub, that is inspiring a new breed of female breadwinners to chase and achieve their goals. It’s my passion and my way of giving back to the world and empowering and supporting women fiercely, as I was empowered to become the person I was born to be. It’s a mission I love and feel that I was always meant to be a part of and I am sprout and honored to be such a huge part of the work we all do there. I know that without the struggles I went through for over 10 years having to fight my way out of an extremely toxic relationship- and hitting absolute bottom, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. It was knowing where I never wanted to be again that was the absolute driving force behind why I’m successful. There are always two options when you hit that point…sink, or swim. There was absolutely no way that I was ever going to give up on this gift of life, and living it to the absolute fullest. It wasn’t easy. Entrepreneurship was a daily struggle because I was learning as I went. There were massive successes, but still so much I needed to know going it alone. But I did it for 15 years raising my boys. Every single skill I honed during that time was like blades sharpening. My Mom, always says that I have a PHD in entrepreneurship and business. I overcame the challenges because my desire to succeed was bigger than my struggles. I knew that if I kept trying and working and figuring out how to go another day and get the small wins that they would add up. I wanted to be an example to my sons that they can achieve anything. They can have whatever they want if they work for it, and to make them proud. Now one of them is chasing his dream of being a Major Leaguer, and the other is chasing his dream of being a Marvel character. That is the lesson. Life will throw you curveballs. You may get hit with a few of them. And they will hurt. I know, I’ve been hit by a few myself pitching to my kid! That’s clearly baseball Mami talk, lol. But no matter your circumstances, I believe that you have the choice. Ultimately, no matter where you start out in life…whether you’re a 16 year old Mom or a woman having to start all over again in life after abuse or devastation – what you do next is completely up to you. Take ownership of your life and live in your power. What I want the world to know about my story is that I am not a survivor. I am a conqueror. And for my brand, that is the woman I want to help other women become, because they are not the same.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It may seem a bit cliche and like the easiest response…but my shoutout would go to my mother. She was a parent at 16 years old, with judgement, ridicule, and hardship now raising a daughter on her own at such a young age in South Florida in the 60’s. Yet, she had the emotional intelligence to create clear boundaries for me, protect me, giving me opportunities that many of my own friends and relatives didn’t have. She went on to build her own real estate portfolio, send me to St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the best private schools in South Florida, setting me up for success. She doesn’t deserve a little recognition – she deserves it all. We often are at different sides of the spectrum, with completely different thoughts and ideas. But she raised me to be strong, fearless, and to have my own voice.
