We had the good fortune of connecting with Triny Mancisidor and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Triny, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have always had a talent for drawing and writing since I can remember. However, in my teenage years, my mother urged me to pursue a career in tourism, thinking it would provide ample job opportunities. I followed that path, but watching my best friends pursue their passions for cooking, serving, and becoming extraordinary hosts, I realized how much I wanted to feel that way. So, I yearned to enter the creative field, specifically in Graphic Design.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a graphic designer who understands business and the communication needs of professionals. First, I focus on understanding or creating a concept for every project and then design the visuals. As I see it, my graphic design and other creative work must serve a business goal (or a nonprofit). Often, people asking for a logo expect results they have imagined. Still, those expectations may not be the best fit for their projects, so I inquire more deeply to understand and foresee situations and create visuals that help them reach their goals faster. It is a method to make the branding design process more efficient that I have polished through the years.

I have been designing for more than 20 years, with lots of editorial design and advertising for brands. I have focused on branding design for over six years now. After taking a couple of years to stay home with my kids, I wanted to specialize in logo design. While catching up on that matter, I discovered crucial steps had to be taken to design adequate corporate visuals and long-lasting logos. That’s how I found Branding Strategy, which is more about communication than design. Concept comes first, and art comes after to enhance and communicate ideas that create a positive impression.

Working on branding implies understanding my client’s business environment and goals. Brand strategy coexists with marketing; it helps Marketing efforts to increase efficiency. People often assume I do marketing, but that’s not true. Brand Strategy is the conceptual foundation graphic designers, marketers, P.R., and other areas in a corporation/business consistently use to direct their efforts.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friends were visiting, I would take them to the beach, but I would drive 2 hours to Marco Island, my family’s favorite beach. I would take them to the Hard Rock Casino for dinner. Hopefully, we could get tickets for a great comedy show or a concert there. I would take them to spot gators at the Everglades. Flamingo Gardens is a great place to learn about Florida’s flora and fauna. The Frost Museum is a must, along with the Perez Art. We would go for coffee or brunch to the Art Deco District. We would order pizzas from Pizza Lovers, and I would take them for tacos and cocktails to Taco Craft.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, Juan Carlos García is a graphic designer I met at the gym in México when I was a teenager; he had just graduated, and he was so happy for me when I told him I wanted to become a graphic designer. He took it upon himself to mentor me. It was 1995-1996. He explained that graphic design was becoming digital and even taught me how to use Illustrator before I was accepted at college! He invited me to knock door to door to offer design services to businesses; it was horrible! But I realized the importance of acquiring experience before graduating, and I did.

I had a lot of help from friends in critical moments along the way. One teacher who taught me a lot was Felix Beltrán; he recently passed away. He was probably the most famous teacher at the University. Still, he had so many other commitments that he wasn’t the best teacher. However, we used to ride the same bus, and I befriended him. During those rides, I listened to his opinions and experiences. Even though he was a bit of a Diva in the classroom, I got to see and learn from the young man who left Cuba to study design in New York and never returned due to the revolution. He described how he had nothing to eat sometimes, constantly feeling hungry and freezing in his studio. He kept himself busy working day and night designing book covers and getting any work available, to continue his studies. He taught me how to properly use the basic design principles I knew about but didn’t know how to apply. That’s a lesson I still practice. Whenever I design, I ask myself, What would Felix say about this logo?
