We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyneesah Davenport and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyneesah, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Hi, my name is Tyneesah. Many know me as Ty. I love this question
“What was your thought process behind starting your own business?”
Funny. I didn’t really have a well thought out process behind starting my business.
I honestly had no idea that when I said “Hop out your feelings and hop in your faith” durning a phone conversation with a friend that it would later become a business named “Pressed in Faith”.
I would put words on a shirt or a hoodie and people would ask me where I purchased it from and I would reply back saying “I made it” and they would say “How much? I’ll send the money to you now”. I felt a little silly collecting money because I had no idea what I was doing. I didnt have a price list and I didnt know how to properly run a business.
Finally I set down and asked God what is it that I should be doing. At the time I was still a full time employee with little knowledge on the business/entrepreneur side of things.
Ive always had a passion for helping others and God instantly reminded me of my days at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania where I received my Bachelors degree. My 4 years of college were not the easiest and I knew after graduating my way of giving back to my university was creating financial opportunities for students that had similar backgrounds as I did. It kicked in! I said to myself.. If I sell shirts I can put the money towards helping students get to school and get through school… and thats what I did! I took a leap of faith and took my paycheck and purchased all the supplies I would need for the business as well as completed the appropriate documentations for the business.
As I approach my 2 year anniversary with the business what I thought was only going to be me creating shirts for people to wear has now shifted to customizing apparel for small businesses, decorating events with custom balloons, while still creating Faith Wear shirts and hoodies. It has been a joy to help many students of all ages prepare for school. Every year I partner with another entrepreneur Ashley Love who’s the owner of “Loves Mobile Tutoring LLC” and we host a back to school drive for students. Hundreds of students come out and receive free book bags filled with school supplies and goodies. Also, throughout the year I create care packages for college students to support them throughout their semester. My number one goal is to continue to grow with the business and eventually be able to support students all over the world by providing scholarship opportunities. I guess its safe to say my thought process behind starting my own business happened while I was already in business unknowingly.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My job title is an Employment coach. I use to work with the state system helping inmates land jobs before being released from the state system. Currently I am in transition of still an Employment coach but working with individuals that have disabilities. I am most proud and excited to be able to help! To help others reach their full potential and to be able to remind them daily that they are needed in this world and to help discover their gifts because we all have some. To be completely transparent I am where I am today because of the different risky decisions I decided to take not knowing where they would lead me. Was it easy, of course not. Taking chances and make decisions not knowing where I would end has been a journey but thats what Pressed in Faith is all about. Not knowing but believing where ever this road takes me i’ll be good. God has me no matter what! I wouldn’t change the way the story is being written for anything. Overcoming my falls/fails has been a challenge but one thing I’ve learned is you may fall/fail but get back up and try again and stay open to learn so you wont make the same mistake twice. Theres no perfect way to life… but theres always a better way. Your story is your story! Feel free to start over, flip the page, go back and even pause how ever many times you feel you need to.
Pressed In Faith is here to show others what having faith as small as a mustard seed can get you and where it can take you.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had to stay in my city and show my best friend a good time I would definitely book an air bnb downtown center city. The views are beautiful and you have easy access to everything.
Im a day time type of girl! So I would make us reservations to one of the cities popular rooftop restaurants. I would book us a spa date and then take a walk by the water while eating ice cream for dessert.
My city has alot of different things to do but center city matches my personality.
Store, good food, and just living the city life.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Honestly, there’s many many people that has been apart of Pressed In Faith’s success. So much love and support from everyone. I am truly grateful for everyone but just to shoutout a few people
First and foremost shoutout to God for not only trusting me with the business but for being a provider and taking care of the business in every aspect and being with me every step of the way. One of our number 1 seller shirts is the shirt that says “#GodIsMyBusinessPartner”.
My second shoutout is to my 2 best friends Kaliah Carlton who is the owner of Carlton Caterers and Taiylor Hobbs who is the owner of STGphotography. From day 1 before knowing it was going to be a business they both have kept me going. Every single time I wanted to give up I can count on them to encourage me and remind me of the WHY. Every new idea they are both ready to support!
Also, Khalia Deborah the owner of Dreams to Founder Inc. has helped me tremendously. Stepping into the entrepreneur life with little knowledge Khalia has helped me with completing and understanding legal documentations as well as providing powerful one on one coaching sessions to layout plans and goal settings for the business. And lastly Giana Harvey the owner of “Do me a Favor”. G has not only helped me and encouraged me with getting started with the business and pushing me to keep going but she has been there to mentor me along the way on the do’s and dont’s.
