We had the good fortune of connecting with Typhanie Stewart and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Typhanie, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I was born in Jamaica where the people are creative, value the simple things, and are able to take what they may have – even if not much – and stretch it to make something beautiful. I try to live my life with as little waste as possible, wheher I’m dealing with food, friends, or finances. It’s enabled me to push past the clutter and focus on the things in both my professional and personal life that matter most in order to be successful.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career is in public relations, but my passion has always been centered in culture. In recent years, instead of just absorbing and enjoying it from the sidelines, I’ve been able to express my love for culture – especially Jamaican culture – through food and share it with others on social media. I started my platform @typhaniecooks during the pandemic, and it rapidly grew into a community beyond my imagination. I’m able to share my love for food and culture with thousands of people every day. Additionally, I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to work with amazing brands including PBS, the National Pork Board, Western Union, A Dozen Cousins x Marvel Studios, and many others.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a South Florida girl who moved to Central Florida just a few years ago. I haven’t completely gotten to know the area yet, but naturally, my top areas to visit would likely center around food. Downtown Kissimmee near where I live is bursting with small-town charm and has a variety of great local eats to choose from. Plus, it’s near my favorite lakefront park to take in some nature and exercise. Disney Springs and I-Drive provide and elevated tourist feel with some amazing restaurants and things to do as well. For a dash of culture, I’d also visit Eatonville, the historic black community that honors their most famous resident with the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts. Lastly, I’d explore downtown Orlando and all it has to offer including the Wells’ Built Museum of African American History and Culture, based inside the historic Wells’Built Hotel.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are many people in my life who deserve recognition for the invaluable roles they play in my life, but two people who have been there to mold me from the very beginning and along every step of my journey and have instilled values and my love for culture are my mother (“Mommy”) and my grandmother (“Mom”).
