We had the good fortune of connecting with Valerie Martinelli and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Valerie, how do you think about risk?
I think that a certain amount of risk is necessary for career and business success. I always say that it is important to think about risk through the lens of regret. If you feel that you might regret something then it is important to take that risk. Taking risks has played a significant role in my life/ career because starting my business was a risk. I wasn’t sure that it would truly succeed beyond a side hustle and I took this risk without much of a safety net. However, I am glad that I did because it paid off and the rewards have been well worth it! It has also taught me how to balance risk-taking and when something could be worth it and when it’s not.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business, Valerie Martinelli Consulting, LLC, is a career coaching consulting firm. I have been in business for 7 years. I work with mid and senior-level career professionals to land new roles, advance their careers, and increase their salaries by $15K- $60K+. What sets me apart from others is that I don’t just focus on the tangibles in a job search such as a resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn profile. I also focus on mindset and the role that it plays in your journey. I am a believer that not every journey is the same and that not everyone wants to continuously climb the corporate ladder. This is about being fulfilled and satisfied in a career, which is very empowering.

I got to where I am today because I was my ideal client at one point- burnt out, taken advantage of, and underpaid. It was through assessing my own wants and needs that I realized starting my business was right for me. It absolutely was not easy but I don’t have any regrets, either. I overcame challenges by learning to ask for help when I needed it and finding the right expert help available. I used to be terrible at asking for help and now I think that there is so much value in it because we can’t possibly be great at everything. That is why career coaching is so important and so valuable as well- because sometimes we cannot see the forest through the trees and need to ask for some help along the way.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d have to acknowledge my family first and foremost who has put with my crazy journey as well as my sales coach, Connie Whitman. Connie is amazing because she expertly taught me her relationship-based approach to sales, which has helped me so much. When other programs were knocking me down and killing my confidence, Connie believed in me and helped me actually do it.
