We had the good fortune of connecting with Velaviee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi VELAVIEE, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing outsiders are probably unaware of about the music industry is the immense emotional, creative, and financial investment it takes to build a career as an independent artist. Beyond the performances and music videos, many artists like me wear many hats—songwriter, marketer, producer, manager, and performer—all while facing significant challenges in achieving monetary stability.

A major obstacle is the widespread perception that music is only worth paying for when it comes from a huge, established star/celebrity. Many people undervalue the work that goes into independent artistry, often expecting performances or creative services for free or at a fraction of what they’re actually worth. This mindset undermines the sustainability of music careers, making it difficult for emerging artists to thrive despite pouring their heart and soul into their craft.

Yet, it’s this passion and perseverance that keeps us going, striving to create art that resonates deeply with people and proves its worth beyond the mainstream spotlight. For independent artists like me, music is a calling—a way to express truths and connect with others. But it’s also a business that deserves respect. Just as you wouldn’t ask a lawyer or chef to work for free, musicians deserve fair compensation for the time, skill, and resources we invest in our craft. Passion fuels our work, but passion alone doesn’t pay the bills.

Valuing our art and paying what it’s worth ensures we can continue creating, growing, and sharing meaningful connections through music. It also supports the growth of a business, helps create job opportunities for others in the industry, and continues to nourish the culture that brings communities together and inspires the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is deeply personal, a reflection of my journey, struggles, and triumphs. I write music as a way to express my truths; translate my self to the world and connect with others. Music that’s vibrant, unapologetic, and soulful—sometimes playful, sometimes profound—but always with the power to connect and stir something deep within.

Mmm… I’d say that what sets me apart, is my commitment to staying true to who I am, being real with myself and with all of you and using my voice not just for self-expression and self-discovery but to continue sharing and creating stories that in some way, shape or form, strike a chord. My music comes from a place of truth, no matter how raw or imperfect it may be. I write to express what’ feels real, not to perfect the image of who I am. To tell stories that resonate with those who share similar experiences and are creating new ones. I’m constantly learning and growing, and I know that means embracing the messiness of life. That’s what I want my music to reflect—imperfect, but real, just like all of us.

My sound is the epitome of Fusion, I’d like to think of it as a musical mosaic that blends Latin American and Caribbean rhythms, flamenco cadences, and elements of hip hop. People in the industry call it “alternative pop,” but I’ll keep the -alternative-, haha

I’m proud of how far I’ve come, the growth and development in my sound, the challenges and lessons that have shaped the different parts of me, as an individual and as professional. I’d like to think that to be human is to be an artist.

I’m proud of the accomplishments that hard work, discipline, and commitment have brought into my life. It’s been incredible to see how my music has started to click with people. Reaching half a million streams on Spotify and almost the same on YouTube, still feels CRAZY to me haha. Even though I know that, in the grand scheme of things and industries, these might still be considered ‘small numbers’: hey, everybody’s gotta start somewhere, right? What matters is that it feels like this is just the beginning, and I know we’ve got so much more to grow and create together.

I’m grateful for the journey and everyone who’s been a part of it so far.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Okay, so if you’re in town, you have to check out a few places! First stop: Lagniappe—it’s this super chill spot with live music (usually jazz), amazing wine, and a cozy backyard vibe. It’s perfect for just hanging out and vibing. Then, we’ve got to swing by Upper Buena Vista Mall in Little Haiti. It’s like a boho retail sanctuary of various artisanal makers, homegrown culinary concepts, and beautiful place to spend a lovely afternoon.

If we’re in the mood for a drink and sazón I’d take them to Calle 8, 100% No explanation needed hahaha.

The Anderson is also a cool spot, It’s a corner bar in North Miami with Dj’s, open mics, and a chill backyard area. Perfect for kicking back and have a couple cold ones.

Then, we’ll get active at Key Biscayne—kayaking, biking, paddleboarding—. If we’re feeling more like a hang out outside but laid back, we could pop by the dog parks in Coral Gables and hang with our pets.

But, let’s be real, I love hanging out and I love my friends but when I’m not out there working or spending time with them, I’m just as happy at home, cozy vibes with a good playlist or Netflix is 100% my natural habitat. Honestly, I’m just a girl that loves staying in with my cats and my dog and is constantly exhausted. Play hard nap harder.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the incredible people who have poured their energy, love, and belief into my journey.

First, Alejandra Belén, my lifelong partner and business collaborator, is a multifaceted soul who seamlessly dances between science and the humanities. She’s a poet, an engineer, and a woman of many talents whose skills and love have enriched my life in countless ways. Her presence brings beauty and balance to everything we do together.

David Espinal, like a guardian angel in my life, is a close friend and brother who has taught me invaluable lessons about business management, entrepreneurial intelligence, the humanity of the heart, and the nuances of financial investment. His words, “I want to help you get in life to where I know you will be—a star,” have been a source of strength and belief in my wildest dreams. His mentorship, support, and presence are things I am forever grateful for.

Natalia Rueda, my right hand and business partner, is the engine behind so much of what we accomplish. She’s a vital part of my team, offering unconditional love and unmatched dedication. Natalia is also an amazing artist herself, and her artistry has deeply inspired and shaped my own, helping me elevate my craft to new levels.

Mike DeVito—my mentor in music decisions and the creative process, but also a good friend of mine. He’s always pushing me to become the best version of myself and approaches my work with unwavering faith. His encouragement and expertise have been transformative, and I’m so grateful for his constant support.

I also want to send a heartfelt shoutout to Fabián Hernandez, Maku, Anamá, Richard Hayling, my friends from Lotus Collective, Locos por Juana and many other friends who continue to stand by me, offering support, bringing new opportunities, inviting me to their stages and candidly offering their company and friendship on this journey. They push me to be a better musician and artist every day. I am so grateful for their constant support and belief in me.

Finally, my gratitude extends to my family, the public, and the fans who make this all possible with their continued support. Whether it’s through work opportunities, streaming my music, or championing my art and message, each of you plays an essential role in making this journey possible. Your belief, encouragement, and passion are the driving forces that keep me going, and I carry your support with me every step of the way.
