We had the good fortune of connecting with Velvet Dad and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Velvet, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
i NEVER pursued anything creative or artistic. It was given to me like a gift from all my family as a chile-dren. I never knew i would be here, there or wherever these things and places are. That’s like asking me why I’m Black and Filipino… to me at least. It’s been in my blood.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work is from the imagination. No clue if it sets me apart nor do i care. I’ll let people who don’t do what i do decide, because they know everything, right?!

I’m proud of learning.

Can’t say it was easy but it involved 4 humans, a tennis ball, Parkinson’s and hip hop😂

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Originally being from Sacramento i would take them to Kupros and Mimosa House for breakfast and drinks. Famous Hot Boys and or Round Corner who in my opinion has the best tacos ever. As for the night life, we’ll hit up Golden Bear, Low Brau then Cabin. Trouble will be afoot after drinking as many PB & J’s as possible. Studio Movie Grill is a must as well as hitting the studio to record. Go to a friend’s house and cook a big feast while dancing laughing listening to music. After that I would take them back to my HQ in San Jose and basically do the same thing except we’ll got to some comedy shows up and down the bay, and go shopping in my neighborhood of Japan Town.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom and her wife/husbands side of the family aka my black Sacramento/Houston side.

My Filipino side in the Bay Area,
Specifically my aunt Tina and my noni.

My big sisters. Vontress was my big brother until I actually met my big brother to remember it.
My other big sister Hallia is just like me….trouble. She’s a menace to society 😂.
