We had the good fortune of connecting with Veronica Castrillon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Veronica, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Perseverance! I always tell my kids and other people about being perseverance having a clear north and not get distracted, by always keeping in mind your family with their support everything would be harder.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets VC Architectural Designs Studio apart from form others it’s that we take our time with clients to understand their needs, we want to make sure we deliver a good product/result to our clients, and honestly communication is the most important part for us. I always knew I wanted to be my own boss. Having a business is harder than working for someone else because is hard to disconnect from work, I feel like I work 24/7 but I love it! When I decided to leave my job as a project manager at an Architectural Firm and finally working full time in my own Business, I didn’t know that I was not going to be able to see my family for weeks at time, I had a big Client in the Automotive Industry and what I had to do for them was designing their Car Dealerships, and I took over 58 projects under my wind and at that time I decided to Hire an assistant. My business grew very fast in the past two years, that wasn’t easy, but I am very strict with myself and discipline and that contributed to my successful. My projects are from Homes to Buildings, restaurants, corporate offices, retail stores, etc., The lesson I learn along the way is to believe in yourself, even if others don’t push yourself harder and focus on what you are doing, get inspired by the good ones and never copy others. If a single mother of two who came from Barranquilla Colombia at the age of twenty with no English made it in the field, she was always wanted to be any other person can, especially the younger generations, they have better tools, and the media helps, as long as they use it for their own benefit. Believe in yourself !

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many places in New York city I love good restaurants and great wines, one of them is Mollusca in the Meat Packing district the design and food are amazing along with the music, definitely I’ll take them to the Hudson Yards, and the Cloisters at the Met, Brookfield Mall outdoor area is a breath-taking experience love water and how peaceful it is, the French restaurant is a must to visit. I ‘ll also take them at night to a helicopter tour to experience the view of the city at nigth .

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would loke to dedicate this to my family, my mom, Dad, my kids and my stepfather, without their support I don’t think I could be where I am in my career. Just like most of the people I had a rough live and my family didn’t have the money to pay for my career as Interior designer in Colombia. I came to United States at the age of 20, and no money just like many other people that migrate to United States, soon after once I decided to become a mother and I gave birth to my son Andrew, four years later I went through a divorce and became a single mother, my parents came to help me with my son and I decided to Study fashion design in New York City not knowing how hard I was going to be for me, a year later I quit because I had to dedicate time to my son and work. Two years later I stared a new relationship, and a year after my second son was born at the same time a big recession stared in 2007 that’s when I lost my job, and I had no chances of getting hired, so I decided to go back to college and study Interior Design and Management. Without their help and support it was going to be impossible to be where I am right now. My kids where very patient, and my parents very helpful, also My second relationship, he was very supportive.
