We had the good fortune of connecting with Vinny Crispino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vinny, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
My business offers the world a way anyone can develop a movement practice that takes care of their body despite the stresses the modern world places on it. So many of us live sedentary lifestyles where incredible technology has engineered movement out of our lives. Nearly everything is automated now, meaning we must move less and less. We can have our groceries ordered right to our house. We don’t need to get off the couch to turn off our lights. Many people don’t even need to leave their bedrooms to work. With so little motion occurring daily, our capacity to move erodes quickly. We are sacrificing mobility, strength, flexibility, and stability for the sake of convenience, which is catching up to many people.
My business specializes in a year-long online movement program designed to be done at home that shows people how to restore movement, reduce muscle imbalances, increase range of motion, down-regulate their nervous system, and ultimately take care of their body in a rejuvenating way.
Movement is medicine. My business teaches people the art and science of movement so they can help give their body what it needs to thrive and continue doing the things they love for as long as they love them.
WIth over 4,000 members worldwide and growing daily, my business serves an important role in an automated modern environment we are all struggling to navigate.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The origins of my business started in my early 20s when I broke my back in a surfing accident. I went from an 8x All-American Division 1 swimmer to barely being able to bend forward or go up and down stairs. After spending years looking for solutions to rehab my body, I came across the work I now teach others. The pain was my greatest teacher. Spending a decade of my life disabled taught me so many lessons about how to care for the body, what works, what doesn’t, and so on. I spent years chasing my back pain, only to find out that what was really preventing me from healing were my movement patterns. Sure, my back needed help, but I was neglecting everything else in search of magic back therapy. It wasn’t until I stopped chasing back pain and learned the art and science of how to get the entire body to move better that things took a positive turn in my life. I now do this with other people who have injuries, are in chronic pain, or don’t move like they used to; I teach them how to take a step back and change how they approach whatever problem with their body they are facing to get better results. The first time I discovered ‘movement pattern therapy’ was some 5+ years after breaking my back. It was never recommended, and I was never referred to it in my years in physical therapy. After my first session, feeling the change that I made myself by learning really simple exercises I could easily do at home; my mission became clear – to tell as many people as possible about this training style. I couldn’t believe something so simple and so effective was out there, and I had never heard of it. I didn’t want anyone else to spend years needlessly in pain like I did just because they never heard of this revolutionary style of training and rehabilitating movement. I went back to school and acquired as many certifications as possible because I wanted to bring this information to the world in a scalable way. I invested everything I had into creating an online program to teach people exactly what to do and how to do it. Some 10 years later, 4,000 lives changed across the globe, and that dream is becoming a reality.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live 45 minutes north of Los Angeles. If a friend were to come to visit…
Monday: We would go first go into LA to have a city experience. I’d take them to Venice, Abbot Kinney, and the Santa Monica Pier.
Tuesday: We’d go to Malibu Beach.
Wednesday: A trip up north to Santa Barbara
Thursday: A day in Ventura County, hiking to The Cross overlook to see the Channel Islands and walking up and down C Street and Main Street.
Friday: We’d have to start wine tasting at Stone Haus in Westlake Village
Saturday: For the last night, a nice dinner at BOA Steakhouse in Santa Monica, followed by a beach sunset to close out the trip.
That would be an ideal week visiting me in LA!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Out of all the people whom I owe my success, the one who takes the top spot is my son, Rocco. He’s been through more health challenges in his 9 short years of life than I’ve seen people go through in a lifetime. His sheer will, determination, and ability to weather any storm are inspiring, and any time life gets hard, I flashback to the moments when he overcame adversity in hospitals, how he smiled through it as much as he could, and despite being the one needing to be taken care of, he. did his best to put a smile on everyone else’s face. I draw inspiration from his heart, courage, bravery, grit, and raw power daily. Cheers to you, little buddy. I hope you read this one day and remember your strength.
