We had the good fortune of connecting with Vonley Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vonley, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
My end goal is for my current lived reality to catch up to the future version that I see for my myself that I am currently still working towards so i can experience the next level of my creativity. I want to have few feature length films under my belt and contribute that knowledge and work experience into my country’s local arts/film community that is on the rise.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an filmmaker based in Barbados. I had a unique cinematic and editing eye from a young age with my work being recognized throughout the region being recipient and winner of my island’s highest local film awards plus 48hr film awards and video competitions. I am grateful for the journey but it wasn’t easy. From shattering my right humerus bone into 4 pieces to facing back to back disappointments within the space I work in the thought of possibly giving up would sometimes come at those same low moments but i always dig deep and rise above my low moments. i learned that when things are low there is only one way to go and that’s up. So by consistently never giving up I kicked into and even stronger more resilient version of myself. I am proud that I never once folded under the pressure and always kept creating no matter what. I knew deep down in my soul there is still a story waiting to be told on a worlds stage and it’s for me to tell it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Alright so there is this place in Barbados call Oistins. It’s a little fishing village/ town and it has some of the best food on island with really nice views of the beach its a really good taste of Bajan culture. Especially on Friday. I like to go when it’s quiet, Its feels so relaxing and picturesque. Look for me by the jetty catching the sunset.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a big shout out to everyone who has been apart of my journey thus far and who believes in my vision. Oh and also Microsoft without them I won’t have started editing from a young age. Their donation to my cause was beyond words and even though I didn’t see it fully at the time, I do now. Thank you everyone, and look out , I’m about to tap in and go beyond.
