We had the good fortune of connecting with Wayneroy Randal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Wayneroy, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
That’s a great question. Originally I am from the Cayman Islands which has a population of just under 70 thousand. I just did production for the Tortuga Festival, which is Florida’s largest 3 day music festival for the 5th time in a row. This year the festival saw 80,000 people in attendance. That’s more people than the population of my country. Currently, I am the only person in the history of my country to ever work on major music festival productions, let alone work directly for a 3 time Grammy Winning Artist/Producer selling over 9 Million Albums Worldwide. I am proud of what I’ve accomplished so far, but there is still more work to be done. I have been enrolled in an Arts University to focus on 3D Animation. I love a challenge, and this is way up there, but by the end of it all I want to be the best to have ever done it!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I wear many hats, but these days, Production Director/Creative Director looks the best on me. That basically means I produce what the audience sees in terms of visuals for music festivals, concerts, conferences, presentations, and so on. So anything on an LED wall is me! The creative director side of me means I do graphics for entertainers, which are usually used for their live musical performances. It can be as simple as their logo on the back LED wall or as technical as multi-screen mapping or advanced outputing.

I think what I’m most proud of is the fact that I’m the first one from my country to work on productions on the scale that I do. For example, Tortuga Music Fest is Florida’s largest 3-day festival and has seen more people in attendance than the entire population of the Cayman Islands. I now have young people reaching out on my social media platforms, asking what has to be done to achieve such accomplishments. It feels good to inspire the next generation and know that my work does not go unnoticed. It is a perfect segue to mention that I was just given notice that I am nominated for an International Arts and Culture Award for the work that I have done here in the States.

Getting here took a lot of long hours, where days turned into nights. I remember there was a Miss Teen Pageant that I used to cover year after year the week before my birthday, but every year I would travel for my birthday. I was editing for hours to make sure I could get the final product to the client before traveling. Every year, I would finish just before sunrise on the day I was traveling. I’ve always been a perfectionist, so maybe most of that time spent on that project was me just being hard on myself to go above and beyond. What is never easy is when the client has deadlines, or the show is about to start, and the client comes with an addition or additions just hours before. I’m sure it’s the same in other working environments, but somehow they always expect you to perform some sort of magic. Luckily, I’ve managed to pull through all these years and really do magic, because trust me when I say that sometimes I feel like I’m Harry Potter.

I think the best way to overcome any challenge is to gather as much information as possible and use it to your advantage. I worked three major festivals in the month of April. With more than 50 artists to cover, that’s a lot of information to gather, but I try to get their set list beforehand, watch their previous performances on YouTube, and study their material and the way they move on stage. That way, when I am directing the shows, I can tell a specific camera to pick up the guitarist because he has a solo on the way. Or, in the case of visuals for the graphic walls, I can look at the set list ahead of time and find the perfect graphic for that particular song. I covered LeAnn Rimes a few weeks ago and studied her set list beforehand. I wasn’t given any content for her set, but I did meet with her engineer before her set to explain what I had created for her set. He looked at me after her set and said “Man, it’s like you’ve worked with us before”.

I do have a certain charm about me, but more than anything, my work ethic and my tenacity to win! I was told by a dear friend and mentor, Mr. Charles Gregory, that you are only as good as your last show, and I live by that! I have gotten to a point where I will sit for hours and make notes on my own work. I make notes of where I went wrong and how to improve. You in the audience might not see anything wrong with a shot that I placed on the video side walls, but I know what my options were, and in hindsight, I should have gone with something more impactful. It’s a different story if there wasn’t a better option, but I capture everything mentally, so I know.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oh man, that’s a great question for an introvert, but let’s go. So assuming my friend flies in on a Monday, that’s definitely a chill day. Relax and eat some good food because it’s about to get crazy. For food, we would hit up Boca House. There are a few locals, but the Doral location is closest to the airport. It’s a food coma after that. Tuesday is for Taco’s…I don’t care what anybody says. Coyo Taco in Wynwood is the spot. Somebody once said, “Club goin’ up on a Tuesday” Well, my guy Walshy Fire’s event “Rum & Bass” at the same venue will have you feeling like that. Can’t beat Taco’s and then Rum & Bass! Wednesday is hump day, which means we aren’t counting calories today. La Birra Bar in North Miami is a must; they have over 25 burgers and some amazing gelato. When the sun goes down, Rooftop Cinema Club in Miami is exactly as the name suggests. A cinema on a rooftop, with popcorn and all. Thursday, we might do the Escape Room in Wynwood, and foodwise, we might take it easy today and do something healthy from Smoothie Babe. They aren’t just about smoothies, but I’ll let you check it out for yourselves. Frrrriiiiiiday sounds like we need to visit LL Cool Blaze at YeelenX. Really dope spot in the heart of Miami for some real good vibes. Saturday is all about WynCarib. A one stop shop for some great food from a variety of different vendors, great DJ spinning some of the hottest music from the Caribbean, all inside the Wynwood Market Place. Here we are at Sunday, and I can’t not take you to church. Church by the Glades is where we are going. It’s not what you’re used to…I promise. I don’t like saying it’s a production, but it’s really a production…and it keeps you coming back. The level of production at this church is never the same as the week before, and the sermons are easy to listen to, and you leave learning something and feeling centered. To wrap it all up, we have to go visit my brother Dr. Esan at Rise and Toast.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Definitely my dad! He started video production in the 80’s. I’ve watched him my entire life and have learned so much from him. I’ve seen his drive and passion to create magic and wanted to do the same. It’s a blessing to work alongside him, and he’s learned a little from me along the way as well. He has always told me to strive to be better than the master. I’m sure he got that from an old Bruce Lee movie, I highly doubt I would be where I am today had it not been for him.
