We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Willie Biggz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ Willie, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
I don’t think giving up is an option. I’ve been in moments where I’ve wanted to give up, but I pushed through just to see what would happen and that’s when everything started to align. Giving up isn’t an option but reinventing yourself or your ideas and how you approach things is.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always had a love for Music, hip hop to be exact, but I grew up listening to everything because of my Colombian background and my older sister and cousins would play house, freestyle, hip hop, reggae and more. In high school I would always make beats on the tables with pens and also make a lot of mix cds but it wasn’t until A couple years out of high school that I ran into an old friend and he told me he was also messing around with the DJ thing and he invited me over to DJ my first set in front of people at a bonfire. As time went by, I slowly started to realize I was different from a lot of DJs because I was mixing and blending in different types of styles of music that the crowd didn’t even expect to hear, but it was working. So I think that’s what sets me apart, the way I play music and what I play is something that the crowd doesn’t see coming or expects but it works because it can take them back to a time in their life or simply just Forget about everything for those couple of hours that I have them on this journey of music. Getting to where I’m at, definitely wasn’t easy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Everything I learned and still learning on my journey is priceless. I think one of the most important things or lessons I’ve learned is that not every gig or party is for me and it’s OK to say no or be told no. Too many DJs have this idea that they want or need to play at every gig and every party, and to me, that’s just a way of either falling out of love with the craft or burning yourself out.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There’s so much to do in the south fl area. For a night out I would definitely take them to the flagler village area it’s growing so much, so many places to party, eat, drink and just have a good time out. Of course there’s the brickells and wynwoods but I would want them to experience more of a local vibe.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Big shout out to my parents for letting me blast music in the house at not so appropriate hours lol. They were big on letting me express my creativity through music. I have to shout out my big bro/og DJ GQ who gave me the opportunity and trusted me to play at my first club gig and saw something in me. And of course all my close friends/family and supporters that would come out and see me even if they had to be up early the next day.
