We had the good fortune of connecting with Wilmer Jobeth Fernández Mikeyla Jerian Maldonado and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wilmer Jobeth Fernández, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a team of two Co-Founders (Wilmer Jobeth Fernández and Mikeyla Jerian Maldonado) our thought process was driven by a deep passion for Puerto Rican history and culture. We wanted to create a space where we could educate and express our identity through art and design, and share those cultural elements with the world. We felt an urgent need to rescue and promote our cultural heritage. We believed that by starting this Cultural Project we could make a meaningful impact on our community and preserve our rich traditions for future generations. Salón Boricua significantly impacts our community by rescuing and promoting Puerto Rican history and culture. We also make collaborations with non-profit organizations like Comedores Sociales de Puerto Rico and Paz Para La Mujer. (www.salonboricua.org) Through our art, we educate people about our true heritage, promoting a sense of pride and belonging. We also make shipping to Puerto Rico and the United States, making our culture accessible to a wider audience. We seek to keep our nationality alive and inspire others to appreciate and celebrate their own cultural identities.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Salón Boricua is a Cultural Project, that focuses on producing unique pieces inspired by Puerto Rican history and culture. What sets us apart is our deep commitment to preserving and promoting our heritage through art. We research historical events and figures, and we share these stories into our creations, making each piece not just a work of art, but also a narrative that educates and inspires.
Seeing people connect with their roots and learn about their heritage through our art is very rewarding. One of the key lessons we’ve learned is the power of storytelling through art. It’s a powerful tool for education and cultural preservation. We want the world to know that Salón Boricua is more than just an art. It’s a cultural project dedicated to preserving and celebrating Puerto Rican history and identity.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
During a week in Puerto Rico? We’d start with a walk through Old San Juan and it’s iconic places, enjoying local cuisine at Manolín. In Manatí, we spend the day at Playa Mar Chiquita and have lunch at a local seafood restaurant. In Ponce, we visit the Parque de Bombas Firehouse and through the historic downtown. In Isabela we enjoy the beaches and then eat at Casita Isabela restaurant. While there are many activities to enjoy, a must-do is “el chinchorreo,” hopping from one local bar or food stand to another, savoring delicious local snacks and drinks along the way is a good idea.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We want to extend our Shoutout to all our customers and followers. Their support and appreciation for our art motivate us to keep moving forward. Every time someone shares one of our pieces or sends us a message of thanks, we feel that we are fulfilling our mission to rescue and promote Puerto Rican culture.
