We had the good fortune of connecting with Woselande Carmelle Theus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Woselande Carmelle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
As a massage therapist, esthetician, and wood therapy specialist, my decision / thought process to start my own business was fueled by a desire for freedom. I craved not just financial freedom, but also emotional, temporal, spiritual, and professional freedom. What initially inspired me was a deep sense of anger, stemming from a lack of affection, love, and care in my own life. I realized that I couldn’t be the only person experiencing this, and I wanted to make a positive impact.
I made a conscious decision to no longer dwell in pain or inflict it upon others. Instead, I wanted to create something that embodied light and love. That’s when I realized the power of touch. Blessed with big hands, I understood the potential of touch as one of our senses. I imagined how different my life could have been if, on those difficult days, someone had simply hugged me and reassured me that everything would be okay. Or if I had been taught about the benefits of massage and the profound relaxation it brings to the mind, body, and soul, helping to release trauma.
I believe that these experiences would have made a significant difference in my academic performance, my friendships, my relationships with loved ones, and most importantly, my relationship with myself. Growing up in the fast-paced environment of Miami, Florida, and in a Haitian household where everything moves quickly, I recognized the need for a space where individuals could slow down, relax, and find solace. I have vivid memories of my mother coming home and talking non-stop, jumping from one subject to another. Sometimes, it would irritate me, but other times, I would observe her from a distance and wonder what would happen if I simply gave her a hug or rubbed her feet after a long day of school and work. Could that bring peace to our household?’
As an entrepreneur, my primary focus was to define the services I offer and the products I wanted to create, all centered around self-love and comfort. Once I realized that God had blessed me with the gift of my hands, along with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, I knew I could be the solution to problems that others were facing. I wasn’t sure where to start or how far my concept of “Sense of touch” would take me, but I knew I had to begin somewhere – one touch at a time – and eventually bring my vision to life.
Through my business, I aim to provide a sanctuary where people can escape the hectic pace of life and rediscover inner peace. I want to offer not only physical rejuvenation but also emotional and spiritual healing. By combining my expertise as a massage therapist, esthetician, and wood therapy specialist, I am able to create a unique and holistic experience for my clients. Through the power of touch, I can bring about meaningful change and contribute to the overall happiness and fulfillment of those I serve.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Sense of Touch was officially established on August 12th, 2020, shortly after the start of the pandemic. I realized that a 9-5 job alone would not be enough to achieve the future I envisioned for myself, which included owning a home and having children. This drove me to start something that would put me in a better position for the future.
Specializing in body therapy, such as massage therapy, facials(2023), and wood therapy, I decided to offer mobile services, traveling to my clients to meet their needs. I believed it was important to start somewhere rather than remain stagnant and wait for the finances to open a storefront, which is my ultimate goal in the future.
What sets Sense of Touch apart from others is the simple fact that there is no counterfeit version. But on a more serious note, what truly sets us apart is the provision of robes and slippers for the comfort of our clients, all included in a certain rate.
Since starting this business, my proudest moments have been when clients speak highly of me, even when I’m not in the room. Additionally, seeing the relaxation on their faces and feeling the tension of the world lift off their shoulders after a session is incredibly rewarding. It lets me know that I have successfully released any tension they had in their neck, shoulders, back, face, or overall mood.
Getting to where I am today, business-wise, has been a journey of faith and determination. It has not been easy by any means, but I firmly believe that faith without work is dead.
Throughout this journey, I have shed many tears and faced numerous moments where I wanted to give up. I have experienced financial gains and losses and have questioned myself as to why I started this business in the first place. However, with the support of my village, I have overcome all these challenges.
One of the hardest lessons I have learned along the way is that not everyone who starts with you will finish the race with you. I have come to understand that not everyone will gravitate towards the vision that God has given me. Many of the losses I have experienced were a result of trying to build a team, but I have realized that I need to focus on myself and my brand and not lose sight of why I started this business.
If there is one thing I want the world to know about me and my business, it is that I love what I do and aim to dominate it well as business is successful upon satisfied customers. Without the guidance of God, I would not have had the courage to start this business. And without the support of my clients and supporters, there would not be “Sense of Touch”. I am grateful for all the love and encouragement that has brought me to where I am today.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area and wanted to have the best time, the first place we would go for relaxation is The Standard Spa in Miami Beach or The Spa at Mandarin Oriental in Brickell. These spas offer luxurious treatments and a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for unwinding and rejuvenating.
After a relaxing spa day, we would head to Sugar Tea Room Miami for a late-night dinner. This place not only offers delicious sushi rolls and cocktails but also boasts breathtaking scenery. The combination of great food and a stunning view would make for a memorable dining experience.
The following day, for breakfast, I would take my friend to the Bistro Cafe, which is my favorite brunch spot. The cafe offers a delicious menu and a cozy atmosphere, making it the perfect spot to start the day.
On the third day, I would surprise my friend by purchasing a cruise to the Caribbean for three days. This all-inclusive cruise would provide us with new adventures, exploring different islands and enjoying the beautiful beaches and scenery.
Although I was born and raised in Miami, I believe in the importance of exploring new places and creating new memories. Traveling to different destinations allows us to broaden our horizons and experience new cultures and adventures.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
