We had the good fortune of connecting with Ximbo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ximbo, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson that I have learned is that I must have very clear what my main goal is, the inner one, that one that can’t always be measured in numbers, the one that lays in the bottom of my heart, the one that is the real fuel behind every action. With that on mind every time that I feel that times are getting hard I remember that It all makes sense because of that primary, life goal, that is strongly linked to my purpose in life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I debuted as a rapper in 1996, since then I have been working as an independent creative artist and performer. It has been difficult because I have always wanted to write songs with strong life changing messages, and it it nos usually the most profitable way to make a business out of your music, but I believe this is something that I can give to the world to make it a little bit better and that is what keeps me going. I was born and raised I México, one of the countrys with highest rates of femicides in the world, a place full of “machos” where the simple fact of being a woman makes things more difficult. Nevertheless I decided to make music and be on the spotlight to say the things that I believe, to encourage other women to do the same… the path has become dark at many moments, speaking out as a feminist in here requires braveness. Things have chanced now a bit, and even though we still struggle I have focus inspiration ad support in more women who are constantly creating safe spaces for all of un to speak out.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We MUST visit the “Museo de Antropología”, go to the center of the city and visit the indigenous and colonial cultures all mixed in the “Catedral” and the round of the prehispánico “Templo Mayor”. We can take a one day trip to the Pyramids of Teotihuacan City. Visiting old barrios like San Angel and Coyoacan, (where the museum of Frida Kahlo is), is also a must. We can eat at iconic restaurants such as “Café Tacuba” (yes, the iconic rock band was named like that after the restaurant), or street food markets in Xochimilco while we take a trip in a “trajinera”. We can go to Chapultepec, the biggest park inside the city, where many museums can be found as well as a botanical garden, cafes, book stores and more.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Big shout out to my Record Label “Sello Jueves”, my everlasting crew “Magisterio”, my mentors Ana Díaz and Mónica Vélez, my very single person partner in crime Bhajan and every single person who has believed in me, you wake me up and make me believe again.
