We had the good fortune of connecting with Yashodhara Suri and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yashodhara, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work/life balance is always a tough thing to achieve. I think I only really started having a good balance in my life with everything on my plate when I REALLY prioritized. I used to have too many things I deemed “a priority” but that defeats the purpose! I have a full time job that I love, a side hustle (my Instagram/content creation), a partner, doggie daughters and a great friendship circle. As someone who likes to really put my all into everything I do and into every relationship I have, it was hard to find that balance. I think about my balance with my relationship and friendships in terms of quality time and communication. I think of my full-time work as 40 hours/week MAX and that’s it.
My content creation is more of a fun side hustle that I don’t let myself stress over. If I can’t take a campaign, I don’t feel bad saying “no” because I’m too busy or putting too much on my plate. It’s really a week-to-week thing in finding the perfect balance, but I finally feel like I’m able to do everything I want to do but still have down-time and time to myself to do things I enjoy alone- like reading mystery novels and cuddling with my dogs.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has definitely been one of my pride-points in my life, so far! I graduated from university in 2017 and from then to now, I’ve grown a lot in my career and learned SO much from so many amazing mentors and colleagues. I studied Digital Media Studies and work in tech in the Digital space. I’ve learned the balance between creativity and tech and how design, strategy and content can be used in many different ways. I wouldn’t say it was easy to get where I am, everything you work towards requires working hard in some way but since I’m really in love with what I do, it didn’t feel SO hard, either. I’ve learned a lot about my value and how to advocate for myself and speak my opinions in a professional setting. I definitely feel very empowered by my career journey and really love speaking to people who are trying to grow professionally in order to help them feel how I feel now. I know I have a lot more learning and growing to do, so I always try to put myself in situations where I can do those things.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
THIS will be hard to answer because I could give a 10-page itinerary for a week long trip in Miami! I love the food/drink scene in Miami and there are always new spots popping up. I would say that we’d go to ALL DAY for breakfast/coffee, if we wanted to get drinks later in the day during the week— we’d hit up Terras/Amara/Pretty Swell/Tigre. If we want to get amazing cacio e pepe for dinner— Portosole/Sapore di Mare/Palat. On the weekend, we’d get lunch or early dinner at Krüs Kitchen or Los Felix. Other spots we’d visit: Books & Books, Ball & Chain (walk down Calle Ocho in general), The Sylvester (late night dance-cap), Thatch, Jaguar Sun, JATTO, The Everglades (day trip on an airboat ride!), North Beach, The Standard Spa. I COULD GO ON! SO I’ll stop here. I think just walking around different areas in the city and getting to see the vibe of the people and the happenings are the best part. There’s also always great farmers markets in every area on the weekends, which is so nice.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my boyfriend/partner (10 years together this year!)- Erik. He is ALWAYS my #1 supporter and encourager. No matter what new endeavor I’m taking on or what’s going on in my jumbled brain, he talks me through everything, makes sure I feel well-prepared and calm. He’s been there through SO many ups and downs and he truly is a constant in my life that I am so grateful for.
