We had the good fortune of connecting with Ylisa Young and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ylisa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
For me as an artist it is essential that I take risks it is what fuels my creativity and fosters my growth. Art is a medium through which individuals express their unique perspectives and emotions. By embracing these risks, I have pushed my boundaries, experimenting with new techniques, and challenged myself . By stepping into the unknown it’s lead me into breakthroughs in my art. I believe i ‘ve made more thought-provoking in depth pieces due to this experimentation . Risk-taking not only keeps the creative process exciting but also allows an artist to discover their authentic voice.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As an avid traveler, I am drawn to the aging of an object. It
could be peeling paint on an old wall, rust formulated on metal, or torn signage. For me, these remnants are a representation of the beauty that comes with aging. My paintings are certainly not a total representation of a weathered wall or a decaying building. My work, however, has a multitude of layers that conceal and reveal a history that I have created. My hope is that the viewer is curious enough to explore the piece and its many hidden layers.
The art is a direct reflection of my love of creating. It is a visual language that acts as a bridge between my thoughts and ideas. It is a visual tool to express central themes of aging, societal concerns, and interpersonal communication.
My initial layers could be paint or paper. There is no judgment when placing down the initial colors and materials. It allows me to be playful with a sense of childhood abandonment. As the painting progresses, intuitively, the piece begins to take a direction. There is a process of painting, analyzing, scraping away, and adding again. Soon, a sort of history is created. It’s a reflective process that is often influenced by the world around me.
I work with an individual piece of art allowing it to speak to me . It starts to develop its own personality. Each painting has a story and I name the painting based on the direction it taken . That being said, part of the fun is letting its ambiguity and lack of objective representation be interpreted by its viewer. I love to hear what others think and how the work speaks to them.
For me art is a life long quest to understand the world we live in . The human interactions and our abilities to communicate fascinates me. My art continue to develop and changes as I take risks , listen to myself and grow as an individual .
My success has developed slowly as my confidence grew . The more I put myself out there and the more exposure I got ,the more I sold . It seems straight forward but you art is so reflective of who you are. It was difficult to be that vulnerablliy.. You want everyone to like what you do but that’s just not possible. Once you stop looking for others’ approval the work gets better and your audience finds you
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Most people I think want that “ Floridian experience..of good food and the beach. I would start off in Miami and work my way up. to Fort Lauderdale or even Boca. Nikki Beach Miami gives you that South Beach vibe. You have the beach right there with cool streets/architecture close by. In addition, Lincolon road is within walking distance for a quick stroll , In addition, Miami has a great art museum., So spending an afternoon at the Perez Museum is never a bad day. I would still go to Wynwood for lunch and walk around. Doya is always a great spot to eat.. The art galleries are not as prevalent in Wynwood anymore however, the graffiti still makes it a great afternoon .You can still find good galleries around Miami. They are
just not concentrated in this area anymore. For visitors
I never forget about the water taxi as it’s a great way to hit a few bars/,resturants and get some sightseeing in while up in Fort Lauderdale..S3 on the beach never disappoints with great tapas. On the intercoastal, Kaluz is a great relaxing restaurant with a solid meal or drink
menu The list can go on and on but if you are in Ft Lauderdale don’t forget to stroll down las Olas. I like the laid back feel of Rivertails for a afternnon bite on the water.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have many people over the years that have fostered my growth . I have had opportunities through classes , mentorship’s and artist groups that have allowed fellow artist to express their opinion in a constructive thought provoking critiques. I have found those to be invaluable.
