We had the good fortune of connecting with Zha Zha Mair and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zha Zha, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up I have always been involved in the arts. I have always loved to paint and design clothing. I grew up creating my own content, I would dress up for fun and make random home videos everyday after school. I also attended an art school where I was able to showcase my work in a gallery. As a young adult, I then became interested in designing my own clothing and footwear. Though I achieved academically, I was always a consistent and constant visual leaner. I found art to always be very therapeutic for my mental and physical well-being. In college I became a member of the editorial team of Strike magazine. I started as a Stylist and worked my way to the position of Creative Director. Through my experiences I have found that my passion is in creating personal, original and creative content. Becoming a brand ambassador has become an extension of my creative persona. I enjoy the styling, creativity and the thought that goes into concept creation. I have networked with so many talented creatives not only locally but across the United States. I have found a supportive and wonderful community of creatives such as myself. I have been lucky enough to collaborate with many different people in the industry. I am excited for the future and where this can all take me!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I started content creating it was just for fun with a couple of friends and I had no idea where it would take me. I’ve been modeling and involved in the arts since I was very young. In 2020, I became more consistent with my content creating. I built a social media platform which encouraged me to have the confidence to reach out to clothing brands. After working with many clothing brands I began to experiment with different styles which brought me out of my creative comfort zone. I would definitely describe my style as eccentric. I love to challenge myself with many different styles including fashion inspired from the 90s and early 2000s. For example, streetwear, goth fashion, lolita fashion, fairycore and even fun pink dresses that make me feel like a Disney princess. I am enamored by loud and colorful fashion. Some challenges I have faced through content creating is judgement, whether it be through social media or in public. At times it can be challenging to be fully confident in expressing yourself when constantly being stared at in public, seeing random people taking pictures of you from afar or even being catcalled. Everyone has a different job and content creation just happens to be mine, I wish that everyone could be more respectful of that. As many know the internet isn’t always the kindest either. Hate comments unfortunately come with the job, luckily I have developed a thick skin. Even though there are obstacles, I will never lose my passion. No judgmental person or hate comment will ever stop me from content creating and/or being artistic. I want to continue to be a brand ambassador and push my creative ability to reach an even bigger audience. I want my content to be influential and push individuals to come out of their comfort zone. I am grateful to find a career path I enjoy as much as I do and I am looking forward to the future and the growth of my social media platforms.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my friend all around the Fort Lauderdale, Miami area and end the trip in Orlando, Florida. We would begin our week on South Florida’s sunny beaches, tourists always love our beaches! One of my favorite spots in Fort Lauderdale is definitely Wilton Manors. We would have lunch at the Alchemist where they have the best sandwiches and decadent coffee as well as an amazing little garden to sit and enjoy your meal. Fort Lauderdale offers an amazing nightlife where clubs and bars line the streets of A1A. I would take them to see the amazing drag shows that are so inspiring. I would love for them to experience the talent and creativity that go into these shows. In Wilton Manors, there’s also a strip where they have cute hot spots such as candy stores and thrift shops. My friend and I would then adventure to Miami, where I would introduce them to the art and culture of South Beach. We would visit the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science where they have amazing exhibitions, a planetarium and an aquarium. I would give them a taste of Miami’s best Cuban food served at Marabu Brickell. Lastly, for the weekend I would have to take them to Universal Studios of course! I am absolutely obsessed with Harry Potter and would love for them to experience the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I know everything there is to know about Universal Studios, I have been going to Orlando, Florida ever since I could remember. You can’t come to Florida without experiencing our incredible theme parks! I have grown up in Florida and I even still have so much more to experience.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In college, I became the Creative Director for Strike Magazine. Strike gave me the opportunity to fully express my individual creativity. After being involved in Strike, I began to take content creating very seriously. In being a Creative Director my role was to strategize the creative direction for each issue. I learned how to scout locations, organize photoshoots and the significance of styling and makeup within each photoshoot. The skills I learned from creative directing all go hand in hand with how I currently create my content. The objective for my content is to always focus on the location or set design and coordinate the aesthetic of the outfit I am sponsoring. My goal in my content is to always create a visual fantasy of the overall theme.
