We had the good fortune of connecting with Zyana Groves and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zyana, how do you think about risk?
It’s a known saying that the bigger the risk, the bigger the possible reward. Since I started my business I have taken small risks here and there, but nothing big, so I never got my name out to more than a few hundred people. Within the past year, I’ve taken larger risks from giveaways to farmers’ markets. I was nervous about doing them at first because I was scared of the loss of revenue. I’m so thankful that I did it because it put my name out there to tens of thousands of people. I receive more orders and have more followers.
What should our readers know about your business?
I, Zyana Groves, created Florida Sugar Treats in April 2022. Florida Sugar Treats is keen on making gorgeous custom cakes and treats that taste amazing too! We offer a variety of flavors all made from scratch. What sets FL Sugar Treats apart from other businesses is our attention to minor details. I have been called a perfectionist quite a few times in my life and that translates over to my business. I won’t give anyone a product that I am not 100% satisfied with. I am proud of how much my business has grown. I used to go a month or longer without having a single order, and it was so challenging to want to keep going. As of today, I never go more than a week without an order and I have loyal clients. I have clients that even recognize me in public if I’m just shopping. I never imagined I would get here when I first started Florida Sugar Treats. I compare my business to growing flowers. You have to water it and put time and love into it to make it grow. I started by planting the seeds, and now I can see the flower bulbs. I’m so excited to see the flowers!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was in town, this is how I’d spend the day with her… First we’d go to Southwest Ranches Community Farmers Market. They have a large variety of small businesses. We’d be able to grab some breakfast there and shop around at the same time! Next, we’d probably stop at Sawgrass Mills Mall since it’s close by. Sawgrass Mills is a pretty large mall and extremely popular with tourists because there aren’t as many big malls if you’re not in a large city. After all that walking, we’d definitely have to go back to my house to relax for a little. Once we’re rejuvenated, we’d start driving up to Coral Cove beach and grab a Publix sub on the way there. I feel like the Florida experience is eating a Publix sub at the beach. We’d probably end up staying there until a little after sunset. On our way home we’d jam out to music to make the hour-long drive more bearable. After we showered and got ready, we’d go to the store to get some ingredients to cook dinner. For the rest of the night we’d stay in, watch a movie, and play UNO.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many people I could shout out, but I decided to shout out Katie from Our Father’s House Soup Kitchen. Without Katie, the seed wouldn’t have been planted to start my business. When I first started trying my hand at cakes, I would do so many a week that I had to find somewhere for them to go. I started bringing my cakes to Our Father’s House Soup Kitchen. I got really familiar with the staff there, but specifically Katie, who runs the Soup Kitchen. As I kept making cakes I would get better and better and Katie started to notice. One day in late March, she told me that my cakes were good enough to sell and have my own business. I thought she was exaggerating. For two weeks I kept hearing her say that, and it finally stuck. I went home and created a logo. Then the next week I created my name – Florida Sugar Treats.
