To pivot or to persevere?  Or more bluntly – to give up or to not to give up?  This is a haunting question, a question that has ramifications far after an answer has been chosen and it’s also a question that almost everyone in our community has had to face at one time or another.  How do you know when to give up and when to keep trying?

I find “giving up” to be such a strong term. I think in a lot of cases, it’s more about determining whether you should continue on the same path or pivot. For me personally, I try to pray through uncertainty and look to God for understanding, but there are certain signs. If you have a talent or an interest burning a fire in the deepest pits of your soul, something that genuinely excites you, gives you joy, and introduces you to an entire world of wonder, then that thing is worth pursuing. You should look at the big picture. If the ends will justify the means, however difficult the means are, then you have to keep going. Oftentimes, the difference between those who reach new heights of success and those who don’t is just that some people decide to continue, despite the rollercoaster of emotions and setbacks on their journey. In my opinion this is a deeply personal question, so my answer can be dramatically different from someone else’s. I would like to reposition this away from a binary, however, because most of life occurs in gray nuance and messy entrails. To me, the real question is what space is there to renegotiate, pivot, evolve if something isn’t working, doesn’t feel right, or is costing too much (financially or otherwise).
