We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Sicherman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was raised in Israel by parents who immigrated from Uzbekistan, governed by the Soviet Communist Party. The KGB would routinely ransack and search homes, and confiscate anything deemed illegal. Fear and anxiety forced my parents’ generation to conceal and organize belongings in innovative ways. Eventually my parents fled to Israel to start a new life and raise their family. Neatly hidden away in some peculiar parts of our home were many things that we did not need or “we will need some day”. Ironically, our home was always clean and tidy.
In the 80’s our family settled in the US, and we eventually moved to South Florida. As time passed and our family grew, we accumulated many more items that we did not need. This caused plenty of stress and anxiety in our family.
As I got married and started my own family, I found myself constantly feeling overwhelmed in my own home. Sometimes I would organize each room thinking it would help, but it didn’t. It was confusing because I had always been good at solving problems. Each room seemed pretty clean, and our “stuff” always seemed to be organized and put away, yet I still felt like the walls were closing in around me.
It was only when I took a step back and questioned the need for each item did I realize that we didn’t need this kind of stuff around! Once I started sorting and purging items from each room, new spaces opened up, and things naturally fell into place. With less clutter around me it seemed that I was able to maintain a more functional space.
A feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction came over me, and I wanted to share it. So I started helping family and friends better organize their lives. Through trial and error I was able to create organizing systems that truly helped people. Eventually organizing became my passion, and I decided to make it my profession.
Being a professional organizer has taught me that our environment, upbringing and experiences help shape who we are and what we keep around us. Sometimes we need to re-evaluate our surroundings, and question what we truly need in life. More possessions don’t actually make us feel more safe and secure. They can sometimes lead to overwhelming feelings of stress and anxiety which can often lead to depression.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Tidy Made Easy offers home and business professional organizing. My services include decluttering and organizing spaces, time management, paper management, downsizing, packing and unpacking. My approach to organizing is not only to help my clients with their physical space but also help them with their mental and emotional well being. My clients understand that I am a non judgemental person, and I am there to help them. I build relationships with my clients that goes deeper than just organizing a physical space.
Starting a professional organizing business was challenging at first. I had to overcome imposter syndrome. Going through people’s personal items and learning about their life stories was difficult. After seeing the positive impact my work had on their physical, emotional and mental well being it made my job easier and more satisfying.
This journey has taught me to be more understanding, accepting and patient. Every individual has their own set of problems, challenges and family drama.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Florida is an amazing place for self-care activities. There are such a variety of spas, hotels, restaurants, yoga classes, water activities and of course the beaches. It’s a great place to recharge and relax. Some of my favorite places are Wynwood Art district, The Standard Spa, Zak the baker café, Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, Downtown Atlantic Avenue and relaxing at the beach.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband and children are my biggest supporters. Quitting a great day job to start my own business was a scary step. They constantly cheer me on and help in any way that they can, even when my schedule is hectic and chaotic. I also have to thank my mother, who is always there to help take care of my family when I’m not available. Their encouragement and belief in my success keeps me going. It’s a huge blessing to have such an amazing support group. I couldn’t be where I am today without them.
