Risk & Reward: can you have one without the other?

By far, the topic that comes up most in our conversations with entrepreneurs and creatives is risk. We’ve had conversations about risks that worked out and risks that did not. We’ve seen eyes light eye sharing about career-trajectory changing risks as well as folks sigh about the risks they wish they had taken. Below, we’ve selected and shared some of those thoughtful conversations.
I think that risk should always be calculated, however you shouldn’t fear taking risk in life. For me, I tend to be seen as somewhat of a “risk-taker”, however without those risk I wouldn’t be where I am today. Those risk have not only taught me valuable lessons on how to move and operate amongst different people and settings, but also has opened so many new doors for me that if I hadn’t had faith and just took that “leap”, wouldn’t be there. The mere fact that I have chosen the life of an artist is as big a risk as almost any vocation. One has to not only create, but also keep a roof over your head. There are numerous obstacles not only for the artist but for loved ones who share his life. The challenge is to not quit, Easier said than done. Risk can return reward, risks are necessary for growth. I’ve moved to Miami to be uncomfortable, and throw myself into an environment and figure my way out. Back home in Buffalo, I played pretty much everywhere to a bunch of different crowds and had that comfortability I could take risks there and be fine regardless, whether that’s trying new songs or trying out a venue that I might not be a good fit at.
