We had the good fortune of connecting with Sasha Dymant and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sasha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was simple; let me create something that I wish existed. As a dancer, artist, and professional I needed to book a photoshoot for new headshots. I reached out to countless photographers on Instagram inquiring about their prices and specialties. It was time-consuming and overwhelming and I had wished there was a company that could do the planning for me. A company who listens to the needs and vision of the client, finds a photographer that matches what the client is looking for, books the shoot, schedules the makeup and hair artists, and is present on-site during the shoot to see the entire process through from start to finish. I recognized this type of service didn’t exist and decided to create it myself to fill the need of artists, professionals, and those alike looking for support in booking a photoshoot. From there, DSP Agency was born.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career began after graduating Emory University with a BA in Gender Studies and in Dance and Movement Studies. I moved down to Miami, Florida to fulfill my role as a Kindergarten Teacher through Teach for America. I had always wanted to teach young students and had always been really great at making others feel encouraged and empowered. During my two years of teaching, and after the worst of COVID-19, I began to focus on dance again. I became a MLB dancer for the Miami Marlins and began dancing and performing professionally. I have always been a dancer, artist, and creative but always for others. I decided that I wanted to start something of my own. Now, I work in Marketing full-time for an Online University, teach dance classes to young students, run DSP Agency, and create content for Dynamant Dance. My unique set of skills and experiences with dance, marketing, and teaching set me apart in the creative-preneur space.
DSP Agency is a photography agency that takes care of everything so that the client doesn’t have to. The agency matches clients to photographers, handles bookings, supports vision creation and outfit looks, and supports clients on-site during the photoshoot. The Agency simplifies the process and takes care of the clients from start to finish.
Dynamant Dance is a YouTube channel dedicated to teaching choreography to beginner and intermediate dancers to bring dance to anyone and everyone. It provides the space for movement, challenge, growth and confidence.
I am most proud of myself for having the courage to put myself out there and re-establish who I am, what I do, and where I’m going. The hardest part was starting – Could I really make money on my own? What if what I try doesn’t work? Will I look foolish to those around me? I had to actively ignore all of the voices in my head that told me not to try. I was able to do this because the friends and mentors around me were paving their own way as well as supporting me in paving mine. I changed the way I thought about myself, I changed the way I spoke to myself, and I started taking actions and proving to myself that I could do whatever I decided to.
The most important lesson I have learned is to believe in my own capabilities and to squash any voice that says otherwise.
Anyone and everyone can start something from scratch – you only fail when you give up. It’s up to you to CREATE your story.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I moved to Miami about two and a half years ago and I have found some perfect spots that I like to take people to. If my best friend was visiting, I would make sure to take her to The Daily Creative for breakfast, Margaret Pace Park for a casual stroll, The Hide Out for coffee, and La Tiendita Taqueria for tacos after some relaxation, a dance class, or a beach day.
Some of the best places and events to check out are the pop up artisan markets, farmers markets, and performances around Miami. 🙂
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a shoutout to those around me that have supported me in both big and small ways and to the Universe for bringing the pieces together.
Thank you to Casey Rosenberg & The Paid Creative Program which encouraged me to create my own path, believe in myself, and see my worthiness. Thank you to Ekandem Essiet (E) for putting time and energy into the Miami dance community and sharing the importance of creativity and accountability. Thank you to Jasmine Garcia for always offering support, guidance, and encouragement. Thank you to Artevivo Dance Studio and Elite International Dance Academy for sharing studio space with me. Thank you to Conrad Bleus, Manny Edel, and Jesus Sanchez for helping me plant the seeds of DSP Agency.
Special thank you to Lu for always reminding me of how much I’m capable of.
