We had the good fortune of connecting with Shawn O’Gorman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shawn, how do you think about risk?
Risk is everything. With no risk, there is no reward. My favorite quote in life is “The Dream is free, the hustle is sold separately”. When it comes to the dream and the hustle, risk is something that is guaranteed in life and your goals to make them happen. If you don’t roll the dice on yourself, double down on yourself, or go all in on yourself when the cards are dealt against you then no one ever will in your life.
Risk is a beautiful thing and is also something that can be calculated. In my opinion, I’ve always bet on myself. I always have my whole life and I’ll never stop regardless of what fate or what people say, When it comes to calculated risk, I always feel that if I’m involved its calculated and something that will come to fruition.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently I am the Director of Name, Image, and Likeness(NIL) and Sports Agent at First Round Management(FRM) in Miami, FL. Prior to this I owned my own Water-sports business and worked in the corporate world with AT&T but no matter how successful I was, the one thing missing was sports. I played sports my whole life and my competitive edge and drive is dedicated to my time playing sports. I am someone that hates to lose more than he likes to win and nothing get’s me moved more than a challenge or someone saying “You can’t do _____”.
Although I am considered young in this business, the only thing I can credit my success to is my dedication and relentless effort to be great. When I first spoke to athletes, the only thing I had to offer was telling them “Trust in me and I’ll get the job done. If you aren’t happy, fire me after 90 days”. Fast forward to today, there has been millions of dollars in deals negotiated and a roster with some of the best talent in the entire country all as the highest paid athletes at their position and on their teams.
One of the things I am most proud of is helping athletes change their life and be apart of their success on and off the field while they live a life they could have never imagined for themselves. This career is as competitive as they come and is no where near what the movie Jerry Maguire makes it seem like, but as long as you plant seeds daily and water them frequently – it grows into something beautiful.
If there is anything people should know about my story, it’s that it is just beginning and still being written. I am no where near where I want to be but I know after a few years I am heading in the right direction. I am someone who always had the dreams too big that small minded people couldn’t understand them. Be the person that bets on yourself, even if you’re the only one crazy enough to do it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The thing about Miami is that it is so diverse. No matter what anyone likes or is interested in, Miami has to offer. Nighlight, food, entertainment, sports, beach, etc. I think that if someone had never been to Miami it is essential to take them around and make sure that they get a taste of everything that the city has to offer and what makes the people live here appreciate it so much. This is arguably the most diverse city in the United States and truly the land of opportunity.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is simple, it’s to my parents and my family. I am someone that had the opportunity to get away from the social and economic norms of my environment growing up. I got the opportunity to get two degrees and play college sports with playing football at Florida International University(FIU), in Miami, FL.
Although I got to do things no one else in my family has never done, that doesn’t mean that I am not where I am without them. Growing up my family and parents always tried to give me the best life they could with the resources we were given. If there was one thing that was for sure, regardless of it all – support, love, and dedication to my goals was never wavered. I am always the one who bets on himself. My whole life the cards have been dealt against me, but I know that regardless of what I put my mind too – my parents and family are betting on me too no matter what the field or other people have to say.
When I was in college, I was away from home for the first time in my life. I kept a picture of my mom, my dad, and I from my first varsity game in High School as a reminder to keep going and to remind myself of why I do what I do… for them. I don’t want them to work as hard as they do anymore. I don’t want to see them struggle. I don’t want my future kids to struggle. I work as hard as I do not only for me, but to give them a life they deserve. That picture is something that kept me motivated throughout college and served as a token to my commitment to be special. I always say.. with whatever you do in life – just be special at it. Be the one cut from a different cloth.
