We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby Bettencourt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelby, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Walking into a hair salon can be intimidating. Let’s face it, you’re there because you need your hair done, the process usually takes a few hours and sitting in front of a mirror with a full head of foils isn’t typically your best look. So with all that being said, making my guests feel comfortable has always been my number one proiorty. I have walked into restaurants here in miami and felt judged from the wait staff and servers making my night out on the town a little less fun. I can only imagine how I would feel if I had roots and brassy hair. Every guest who walks into Makers Loft should feel like they just walked into their favorite spot. Im all about that little extra sauce with each guest. I always focus on a good consultation ensuring what my guest wants is spelled out ahead of time that way there are no surprises at the end of the service. Its like going on a first date, you find out a little about each other and see if youre on the same page, and if all goes well, you’ll never have to look for another hairdresser again. Same thing goes for my guests who have been coming to me for years, as I get to know what you like and dont like and I know the history of your hair and what it can handle then I can make suggestions, reccomend different styles/products, and ensure that you will always been the girl with the good hair!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The art I create is all around feelings. I strive to make my guests feel confident, beautiful, and important. They’re plenty of talented stylists in Miami, but not all of them can make a client feel like not only does their hair look bomb, but that they are on top of the world, Experience matters, I always try to remind myself that although it may be just another work day, my guest probably has been looking forward to this day and its my job to make it special,
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The first stop would be to grab some food at a tapas restaurant like Bulla Gastrobar. I love sharing food with people, it makes it exciting to order a few things and not be too shy to ask for the menu again. HA HA We would definitely have to go to other food spots like Los Fuegos, SuViche, and Carrot Express. Inbetween our food comas we would go to the beach, or rent a boat and hangout at the sandbar. We would go shopping at brickell city center and catch a movie at the CMX theatre.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As corny as it is, I would like to shoutout Joshua Pavao, my boyfriend. We all need that one person that we can tell our crazy dreams to and not be put down about working too much and rather just be there for you and to keep you motivated to be better,
