Working hard or hardly working?

What’s the right balance between work and non-work time? The traditional 9-5 has slowly disappeared with the emails and zoom and texting going far beyond traditional business hours. We asked members of our community to share with us how they think about work-life balance.

Before I had my son, work-life balance was never an issue. I worked hard, but I also took time off and made sure to use my vacation time. After my son was born, I struggled with finding the right work-life balance. Truthfully, I still struggle with it. Parenting is very encompassing, both physically and mentally, and it’s imperative to find a balance that works for me. One of the things I do is set boundaries with my time. I make sure not to overschedule my calendar, so I’m not going home feeling overwhelmed or stressed. Because when I feel stressed, my energy transfers to those around me, like my son and husband. When I started my first balance, I had zero work life balance. I worked all day and night, 7 days a week. I very rarely took breaks or time off. That led to me experiencing burnout, high stress levels and a variety of other negative physical symptoms. Working that hard didn’t prevent the final result, which was me having to sell the business. I therefore made the conscious decision to take a different approach in my current business. I set it up in a way that would allow for greater time freedom and balance. Work-life balance is essential. For me, the model of the 24/7 hustle is not a way to live. We’re so used to living in a constant state of stress that we forget to take care of ourselves; feeling bad when we get sick instead of taking time to heal, or always comparing our grind to someone else’s. It’s all an illusion and it can drive you mad if you don’t remember to do things you genuinely enjoy. Balance is so important to have in life. Balance became more important to me over time as I learned to work with people based off of their energy. Making sure you make time for the things that are valuable to you is essential. Finding the right balance may be difficult, especially if there’s a specific project that you’re trying to bring to life. Grounding yourself and coming back to your safe space – which I usually find by being alone or at the beach – keeps us from burning out.
