We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyneka Rene and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyneka, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It’s funny how things come full circle. I originally went to beauty school in Baltimore back in 1998. Needless to say, life happened and before I knew it, I was in the Army, with 2 children stationed overseas in Germany. I met my husband there in Germany and had another child. I was still kind of doing hair and nails of the Soldiers I was stationed with just to keep up with my skills. While in the Army, I continued my education so shortly after I got out, I finished my master’s degree in Healthcare Administration. After working for the Federal Government as a civilian and many different capacities, I decided that I wanted to rekindle my love for the beauty industry. I was in love with some of the new trends that had begun to pop up in the nail and skin industry to be specific. So, I went back to beauty school to brush up on my skills. This time I pursued my Full-Specialist License.
All the while I was going through school, there seemed to be a consensus that there was not too many Black American Owned Spas where people of color specifically can come and have their beauty services performed in an environment where we feel appreciated, respected, and comfortable. I, myself, have had bad experiences in the Asian-Owned and Operated spas. I’ve come into their shops and have been communicated to in a disrespectful manner, have been shamed about what service I wanted or could/couldn’t afford, and I have been disrespected when I bought to their attention that I was not satisfied with the service I have received. My motto has always been, “If not me, then who”. So, after I finished school, I left my job in corporate America to start my business. I own a boutique day spa where we do manicures, pedicures, massage, customized skin care, makeup application, and waxing. We strive to provide superior service in a comfortable and welcoming environment where all people are respected.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business, Face the World Esthetics and Nail Care, is not your ordinary boutique day spa. We offer, customized skin care, manicures, pedicures, waxing, massage, makeup application, and lash extensions. What makes us different is we actually listen to our customers. We strive to make sure all of our customers leave happy and Ready to Face the World! (Hence the name). I have lots of business experience. Most of my experience comes from working in the healthcare industry. If you don’t know, healthcare is one of the biggest businesses in the US. I have had the pleasure of working in 2 of the biggest healthcare systems in the US. Although, I am aware that the beauty industry is different from the healthcare industry, there are many qualities that overlap. Customer service and customer experience are definitely what drives the medical industry as well as the beauty industry. As a business owner, my 1st priority is to ensure our customers are satisfied, that’s the most important lesson. Without customers, you are nothing.
I would just like people to know that Face the World Esthetics and Nail Care is dedicated to providing the absolute best spa experience in the beauty industry. I come from Baltimore City and was never exposed to business practices. I was just happy I graduated from high school because I was 6 months pregnant when I graduated. I have lived all over the world and met so many people and if you would have asked me 5 yrs ago if I would be a business owner, I would have probably said no with a passion. Life has many twists and turns. I’ve learned to be flexible and open minded so that I can receive all the blessings that are coming my way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my bestie comes to visit, the first place I take her is to my spa so we can get her nails done and skin taken care of. After that, we like to go down to the beach. My favorite beach is Haulover beach in Miami. I prefer the nude side. I guess I am just free spirited like that. For lunch, I’d take her to my favorite spot in Pompano with the best views of the beach, Beach House. They have great food and vibes are awesome. For night life I will take her to Velvet Lounge in Sunrise. They have great food, great music and their hookahs are great! The next day we would definitely need to go down to Wynwood and stroll around and maybe grab a bite to eat at Grails. One other thing I absolutely love to do is kayak and my favorite spot to do that is Oleta River State Park, so at some point during her stay I would definitely take her there.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout my husband, Kenny. He was definitely instrumental in helping me make the decision to open my spa. He has always been there for me and supported me.
