Meet Anwar Wright | Attorney-at-Law & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Anwar Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below. It’s an amazing story, all the way from Jamaica.
Hi Anwar, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is my attitude/mindset. That is the single most determining factor! How you think determines how you behave, and that not only has an impact on the things you do, but the people around you, especially if you lead a team.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I run a full service Law Firm in Kingston Jamaica which is primarily geared towards civil litigation. We handle a wide a range of legal matters in the areas of Corporate & Commercial Law, Conveyancing, Personal Injury and Death, International Trusts, Probate & Estate Planning, International Trade and Finance Law, Intellectual Property Law, etc.
I can’t really jump atop the bandwagon and sing “started from the bottom now we here” because the foundation was laid for me to build on. However, laying the building blocks was, and continues to be serious work that requires discipline, dedication, commitment, endurance, and strength of mind and body.
I say this often to my colleagues, “the law, and the business of law are two different things”. You can be the best lawyer there is but still not understand how to run a successful law practice. The business of law requires tools, mechanisms, innovation and importantly, people management (good leadership). I learned long ago that I could not compete with the big firms on my own. I had to create replicas of myself through teaching, guidance, and mentoring, in order to build a proficient team. I had to utilize tools and mechanisms in order to boost efficiency within the firm.
Ultimately, the real key to a successful law practice is happy clients.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The best thing about Kingston, Jamaica is really the people. The people are what bring to life the exciting and interesting places to go and things to do. The food is the second best thing and may sometimes be on the same level as the people.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It might be cliché, but I have to dedicate my shoutout to my mother. She has been the motivator, the mentor, the guiding star, and inspiration behind my success. I can say without reservation that I would not be the person I am today without her.
I also want to give a shoutout to Mr. McPherson who signed off on me taking almost 4 extra subjects back in university, which I needed to pass in order to graduate with my LL.B. It’s been so many years but I never forget. Thanks for believing in me.
