We had the good fortune of connecting with Patricia Hubbard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patricia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly, the biggest driver behind starting my own business was the ability I have to help people in a way that I think works best. I don’t have to follow anyone else’s structure, or program. I get to develop my own program, based off of the research I’ve done, the experience I’ve had with clients, and what I’ve learned to be what truly helps people transform their health. My hands aren’t tied by having to play by someone else’s rules.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m a nutrition coach and business owner. I help busy professionals to transform their health WITHOUT having to count calories, macros, or points. I started out in my education and career in the field of Sport Psychology. I got both my bachelor’s and master’s in sport psychology because I am absolutely fascinated with how the mind works and can really control everything that we do. As an athlete growing up, I realized just how important having the right mental preparation and mindset was when it came to sports. Going into grad school, being a huge baseball fan, I had the dream of working with MLB teams as a mental performance coach.
That being said, I’ve always been interested in nutrition. I was stuck between getting my Master’s in Nutrition or Sport Psychology, but after working with several nutritionists and registered dieticians myself, I realized that giving people set meal plans or calorie targets wasn’t what I wanted to do. I thought that’s all that nutritionists did, and it just wasn’t for me. I was much more interested in how the foods we eat support our overall health, so I decided to keep nutrition as more of a hobby and interest rather than professional path.
That is until midway through grad school when I took a health psychology course, which really helped me to bridge the gap between my two passions, the mind and nutrition. This course helped me to see just how important mindset is when it comes to adopting healthy behaviors, sticking to a nutritious diet and workout program, and really being able to transform one’s health. So, upon completing my Master’s, I coupled my Sport Psychology education with a nutrition coaching certification and decided to open my own practice where I help clients to transform their health through a holistic nutritional approach.
What I’m most proud about is my ability to take such a unique approach to nutrition coaching. I don’t subscribe to the meal-plans or calorie counting approach. I don’t think that’s what works long-term, and in many cases, believe it can actually be detrimental when it comes to our overall health. It would have been easy to enter the nutrition world and hand my clients a calorie count. In many ways, probably a lot easier than the approach I take, and the program I built. But, at the end of the day my goal in my business is to help millions of people transform their health, and I know my approach is the one that will do just that.
Building a business has been anything but easy. But finding joy in what you do, recognizing your deeper motivation that’s driving the most mundane tasks, that’s what makes the hard days easier. That’s what helps to keep me going.
The biggest lessons I’ve learned is to make sure your priorities are in order. If not, you’ll be spinning your wheels, not getting what it is you want or need. This goes for both in life, and in business. You’ll find yourself always “doing”, but never getting what you want done.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This one goes out to my grandpa. His struggle with Dementia was what forced me to rethink my approach to health, to dive into the research and shift the work I do with my clients to help them with what really matters. And, his approach to his own work as a social worker, helping anyone and everyone in need, inspires me to do the same.
