We had the good fortune of connecting with Sadé Payne and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sadé, how do you define success?
Success is a word that varies in meaning to individuals based on their way of life and beliefs. Personally, success is the ability to accomplish anything I put my mind towards despite the hurdles that I am likely to encounter along the way. Success is me being creative and finding a way to get things done, proudly utilizing what little I have until better can be done. Most importantly success for me isn’t only about financial stability and investing towards my future but also to make my parents and mentors proud.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a 25-year-old Barbadian fine artist specializing in capturing the turbulence of the sea. Although having an Associate Degree in Fine Arts from the Barbados Community College, my style is largely self-taught. Acrylics on canvas is my medium of preference, giving me absolute freedom to utilize bold placement of pigment with palette knives and gestural brushstrokes to depict the movement of water while still paying dedicate attention to the refraction and reflection of light above and below the surface. Unlike the typical beach scenes which hints activity among people, the swaying of coconut trees, fisherman at sea and the sailing of boats upon the horizon, my work deliberately differs by eliminating all distractions.

My works embraces a closeness through my eyes of how I envision the experience would be to cross paths with such rough seas. Appreciation and mindfulness are all qualities I aim to convey to my audience through my work.

Energetic Artz was initially created in 2015 as a Facebook forum just to keep track of my artistic journey as I harness the skills acquired from the Associate Degree in Fine Arts program combined with experiments influenced by YouTube tutorials to develop my now celebrated distinguished style. Thanks to the advice and support of my parents and former tutor Mr. John Springer in early 2017 I decided to become a full-time artist utilizing Energetic Artz as my business brand.

Being an entrepreneur especially a full-time artist is a huge risk to take. In fact it is one of the biggest risks I’ve ever took in my life. With that I had to will my mindset to make sacrifices, separating my wants from the needs and put in the time to research and improve my skills. Most of all I always try to remember that this was the path I chose, especially when at times the temptation of quitting may occur.

In a nutshell I always try to remember the journey, the persons who help molded me into the artist and lady I am today and the values my parents instilled in me from an early age.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Exploring and hiking the rugged eastcoast of Barbados, then lunch at the Round House with panoramic views of the atlantic coast. Then retreat to cool dips in the tidal pools below Soup Bowl while searching for shells.

Or lunch at the Animal Flower Cave in North Point and then intimate moments inside the cave pools reconnecting with nature and embracing the views of the turbulent blue seas.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am privilledge to have so many people who have contributed positively to my creative journey.

I will like to truely acknowledge these two individuals Mr John Springer my former tutor at the Barbados Community College and Barbara Powell McSwain who contributed siginificantly in the early stages of my artistic path. These were the first persons besides my parents who saw my potential and invested in art supplies for me to practise and create.

Dominican artist brothers Shadrach Burton and Gharan Burton who were my 1st art mentors encouraging me to draw and utilize whatever objects I found lying around to create. They often challenge me to think outside of the box.

Thanks to the curators Oneka Small founder of Artist Alliance Barbados (AAB) and Anderson M Pilgrim Executive Director of the Caribbean Fine Art Fair (CaFA) for giving me the working experience and knowledge of the fundamentals necessary to become a professional artist.
