We had the good fortune of connecting with Shelby Morrison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shelby, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Fitness has always been a huge part of my life, as something I participate in, and have a passion for. Since being active and working out occupies a lot of my time, I figured why not try and turn this into a business?! Friends and family were also turning to me looking for workouts, so I realized I could be onto something with this!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started off as a Personal Trainer, training clients privately, or two people at a time. I do enjoy connecting with people intimately, but then I discovered teaching group fitness, which lit me up in a new way. It was the pandemic that got me comfortable teaching group fitness, since I started teaching group Zoom classes twice a week. I was quite proud of people who came together each week to move with me. It felt like a comfortable family, in such an uncomfortable time. A big challenge was trying to get people to come to class, whether it was due to their insecurities, or simply not having motivation. It was up to me to motivate and inspire people to show up for themselves, even when they didn’t feel like it.
Some big lessons I have learned are that success comes at a price, and hard work and dedication will pay off. I am still a work in progress, as we all are, but having a passion for something is the perfect place to start.
Just know, if you ever work out with me, I provide you with the most comfortable, enjoyable, and energizing experience, leaving you feeling better than before we got started. My goal is to motivate, push, inspire, and help you reach your potential, and focus on the feeling, not the way you look.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A girls’ trip to Miami?! Say no more!! As much as I love working out and staying healthy, this girl definitely knows how to indulge and let loose. I would start off by leading us in a morning workout to get us moving and energized for the day. Some days, maybe we would take a class at one of my favorite studios, Solidcore, if we were looking for something different, with a machine we do not have access to on our own.
This would then be followed by a nutritious, yet very delicious brunch at one of my favorite healthy spots, either Pura Vida or Carrot Express.
Next up, it’s time to grab the bikinis and sunscreen and head to the beach. There is nothing better than relaxing on a beach with a gal pal, catching up, bathing in the sun, and splashing in the ocean. I, of course wear plenty of sunscreen, and always make sure to cover my face with a hat.
Once we’ve had enough sun, it’s time to head home to shower, chill in a luxurious robe, and get ready for a night out! We would head to any of my favorite restaurants, which include Carbone, Mandolin, The Surf Club, KYU, MILA, or Joe’s Stone Crab. After dinner, it’s time for drinks at either Faena Hotel, Watr at the 1 Hotel rooftop, or Broken Shaker or Sweet Liberty for something a little more casual.
The next day we would head to Wynwood to check out the cool art, as well as do some shopping. We would stop into Zak the Baker for lunch, and then grab Salt & Straw ice cream as an afternoon snack.
The whole trip would also consist of plenty of walks, whether along the beach, the boardwalk, or just the palm tree lined streets.
I’m a big basketball fan, so we would try to sneak in a Miami Heat game as well!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would credit a lot of my passion for health and fitness to my parents. Growing up, they were always active, and working out, so I was surrounded by it for as long as I could remember. Taking care of ourselves and living a healthy lifestyle has always been important in my family, so I guess you could say it came naturally to me!
