We had the good fortune of connecting with Priscilla Rachel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Priscilla Rachel, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Deciding to listen to my intuition above all else. While I truly, deeply value the perspectives and advice from those around me – people who I care about or people who may be doing what I’m doing – I strongly believe that our lives work best when we listen to our inner voice and the call of our soul.
I think once we really befriend and get to know ourselves, it makes it easier to get clear on what our inner knowing is trying to tell us and to understand where it is trying to steer us. Every time something within me was repeatedly telling me something – whether it be to take or leave a job, to live somewhere, start learning something or take a risk – it has always been something that I was later very grateful that I acted on. I believe that we all have this inner guidance and that it’s possible to develop and strengthen it when we set that as our intention.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Art is one of the things that I love the most in life. It’s something that has brought me peace, stillness, and fulfillment ever since I was a little girl. My artwork incorporates different styles – ranging from abstract to realism, surrealism and what I like to call dreamism. My daydreams are where I vividly first see what I later paint, and I create with the intention that some can feel something when they see my work – whether it be they feel more empowered or start thinking more about further pursuing their own dreams.
When it comes to my art, I’m glad that I haven’t given up, even when faced with obstacles that sometimes made me think I might need to. Early in 2022, I seriously injured the hand that I paint with. I didn’t want to let go of my big dreams and goals, so even though I was upset, I decided to see if I could teach myself to paint with my other hand – since I had originally taught myself to paint to start with. It was a slow-go at first, but then I was honestly a little surprised (and extremely relieved) when I realized that I could paint with my left hand, too. My right hand eventually got better, and now I have a lot of fun painting with both hands.
All those efforts paid off since I achieved one of my biggest goals; I’m very grateful and excited that I exhibited during Art Basel Week this year for the first time at Red Dot with Perseus Gallery. It was an amazing experience. The gallery and artists were all so wonderful and memorable.
I’m looking forward to creating a new artwork series for upcoming projects and to working on new goals to help me grow further. I got to where I am now by putting in a lot of time to develop and improve my skills, researching how others have succeeded in this field, outlining what would be needed to plan for that, and by making sacrifices; I didn’t always spend my time or resources in certain ways I would have wanted to in the short-term because I knew what I was working towards in the long-term. I was happy to do this, though, since I’m so passionate about creating art, and feel very fortunate that I’m able to do so.
Something else that is very important to me is fostering and encouraging the community of artists and creatives around me. Although I’m very competitive with myself, I don’t feel the need to be competitive with other artists. It makes me really happy when I meet new people that I can support, encourage and learn from since I feel we are all in this life together and can get further together.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some favorite spots that I would show friends from out of town are: Wynwood – walk around for the street art, check out the Museum of Graffiti and Wynwood Walls, then eat at Bakan or Joe’s Pizza. I’d also want them to see Faena in Miami Beach since it’s so beautiful and there are different fun areas within it, as well as Moxie’s and Socialista in Brickell. They’d also have to see The Underline in Downtown/Brickell since it’s one of my favorite things about living in Miami; I love how they are taking care of our environment and making it more beautiful, and how they offer different cultural events for the local community.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout would go to my family and closest friends, first and foremost; they’ve been unwavering in their support and enthusiasm for me pursuing what I feel is my calling in this life. I would also include everyone in my networks who has ever uttered an encouraging word or shared something that they thought would be helpful. Equally important to me as those who support and believe in me are those who don’t – or who don’t necessarily see my vision until I bring it to life and help them see it. I find it just as motivating when someone isn’t sure about the risks I take. It makes me want to work even harder to show them what I was always so sure of. I never hold it against them since I know if someone isn’t comfortable with taking certain actions or experiencing uncertainty themselves, they might not always be comfortable watching someone else do it.
