Meet DJ South Beach

We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ South Beach and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ South Beach, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always knew I wanted to work for myself. Growing up as an immigrant I watched my mom create an amazing life for us from scratch by choosing to be an entrepreneur. I originally started DJ’ing in 2013 on a very small scale, but gave it up to pursue a “real job.” You know how society can be kind of pushy when it comes to dictating what is and isn’t a “real job.” I then joined the military and learned a lot of life skills that have played a role in making me the person I am today. A few years ago I decided to pick up DJ’ing again and in the past year I’ve made it my full-time career. 100% all in, and I’m so glad I did. I can sit here and regret giving it up back in the day or wish that I would have gone all-in sooner, but the success I’ve seen in the past year alone is enough to make me realize how much more is to come and honestly, I’m stoked.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m technically an open-format, multi-genre DJ. But right around the time I picked DJing backup is when Latin music started to become more mainstream thanks to artists like Bad Bunny, and that’s really my specialty. Don’t get me wrong I can play anything, something most DJ’s can’t do, from a deep-track country song to a throwback salsa hit, but Latin music is really where I thrive.
So my combination of knowing nearly every popular genre of music plus having a specialty in Latin music has really made my business do well and that’s something I’m very proud of. It’s a way for me to represent my heritage and it’s so exciting to finally see latin culture get represented and appreciated in mainstream culture. I’m also fully bilingual, so I can really make everyone at an event feel heard and included by MCing in English and Spanish.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I highly recommend visiting Wynwood! The scene there has been transformed into an artsy neighborhood with tons of food and music spots. I love Asian food so I’d take them to 1-800-Lucky after walking around and looking at the murals and amazing art. After that, of course, I recommend the Wynwood nightlife. I’ve played at Racket which is a blast, and I also recommend Pilo’s which has an amazing outdoor patio with fun parties and amazing music. For a calmer night I recommend hitting J Wakefield Brewing for some nice beers and the huge Darth Vader mural. You truly can’t go wrong with a night out in Wynwood.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
It’s difficult to choose just one person when so many people have helped get me where I am today. I’d love to dedicate this shoutout to my parents, who support me with every decision I make, my uncle who is truly my right-hand man and is a key part of my success, and my wife who helps this business run smoothly day-in, and day-out. None of this could be possible without them!
