We had the good fortune of connecting with Linae` Hendricks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Linae`, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up, I never quite knew what I wanted to do career-wise. I was always a creative person deep down, from school projects to making flyers for my Church using Microsoft Publisher, I just had a knack for it. So much so, I did my Bachelor’s in Social Work and I ended up being a Graphic Designer. I amaze myself each time I make something from scratch and just seeing the joy on someone else’s face, the excitement in their voice when you surpass expectations, it’s an amazing feeling. Every time I open my computer and open a blank canvas, it opens a world of endless possibilities of what I can create next and I enjoy the rush it comes with.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I remember when I just started designing, it was scary, I suffered from Imposter Syndrome. I missed out on so many opportunities because I told myself I couldn’t. I’ve given up so many times. I used to have to call my friends to talk me through designs because I had no faith in my skill. Now I’m nowhere near the creative I want to be but the biggest lesson I’ve learn’t so far is: Just keep going, Never give up… you have to be willing to fail in order to succeed. I could’ve stopped designing years ago but I needed to see how good I could get. That was the best decision I ever made. Now I’m putting myself out there. I just landed a major client and that’s because I never gave up. Not everybody is gonna like your work but everybody has a space in the creative community and that should be enough for you to keep going.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Jamaica is known for having the most beautiful spots, once you can find them. You can never go wrong with water bodies–make a trip to the river or a beach and have a chill day. Finding adventure is easy too: Riding ATVs, Sea tubing, river rafting, climbing waterfalls, we’re not short of that, When it comes to Jamaican food, jerk chicken is in the top 5 of “Foods you need to eat when visiting JA”. That and a box food from a local cook shop – bussing!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s so many persons who believed in my creative journey from the start. My friend Jovi has a special place in my heart forever because he showed me the ropes and he has so much faith in me and I am truly grateful for his advice and all the times he told me to go “practice”. To all my friends who motivate me when I doubt myself and those who support me by bringing my craft into rooms my feet have never entered. I can’t name them all but a huge part of my success is because of them.
