We had the good fortune of connecting with Pia Paez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pia, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
For me, definitely dedication and constancy. Give little steps as often as you can no matter how little they are or how stuck you feel and, most importantly, take care of yourself. Taking care of my mental health, my body and my soul are my most important habits, without it nothing works.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am where I am today because I’ve been constant. It hasn’t been easy for sure. I left Venezuela shortly after I released my first singles and put my name out there in the streets and then, suddenly, I was in NY having to restart from zero, without friends, without my piano, by myself. Going through a migrating process, a toxic relation breakup charged with a lot of trauma and a heartbroken with no plan. Having a strong mindset was so important, forcing me to give steps when I was in the lowest emotional level, or allowing me to take it easy. I stop caring about having due lines and releasing songs and I was instead caring to keep myself creating and grounded. Understanding I was going through a migratory process, and that my path and timeline was different than for the others (This was helpful when trying to compare myself). I feel me and my music are resilient. Now I’m producing my own songs, and I get to play with genres and styles as much as I can. I come from a small town in Venezuela, I’m in NY, I have a song in a show on Netflix, I’m writing this interview… if that’s not determination and resilience, what is? hahaha
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many spots and things to do in NYC so beside the mandatory stops (museums, Brooklyn bridge, yada yada) My list for places would include:
To eat: Mission Ceviche, Lella Alimentari, Otis and Santa Salsa in Bushwick, Good -Belgian- beer and food at BXL café in midtown.
Night Out: Toñita’s (Caribbean Social Club in Williamsburg), Basement in Chinatown.
Live music: Rockwood Music Hall, Jazz at Smalls or The Keep, maybe a drag show or party at the Deep End in Ridgewood and an Open to All party.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
In this road there is NO way you can do it alone. A LOT of people deserve to be named and I don’t want to left anyone out, so I’m gonna apologize for not naming everyone and highlight some.
My family most definitely deserves a shoutout my sisters have been part of my creative team since always.
Shoutout to all my ex bandmates and every single one of my musicians!.
To those close friends who give a like to every post, comment every youtube video and stream my songs while having to -also- cheer me up in my lower moments.
Shoutout to Natalie Romero-Marx. She’s an amazing Colombian artist and friend who helped me get my first Piano in NY.
And an important one for me, a major shoutout to those men who help women grow. Those who teach them, encourage them and help them. Definitely I have my list of them. Andrés Sosa, Hector Martinez, Willy Rodriguez, Dil Mota are some I cherish in my heart.
Last but not least, FANS! nothing could happen without you. Shoutout to you!
