We had the good fortune of connecting with Jose Ortiz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jose, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I come from a pretty risk-averse upbringing. Like many of us, I was taught to go to school, land a good job, and save for retirement. You know – play it safe. We all know that a lot has changed since those days. I realized that if I were to accomplish my lofty dreams, it wouldn’t be as an employee. Actually, I saw being an employee as a bigger risk than going at it alone.

So I took a huge risk in 2017 and left the corporate world for good. It was the scariest thing that I have ever done in my life. but I knew that if I were to take a risk, it would be on myself. We are the only things that we have control of, after all.

Chasing dreams isn’t easy. Actually, it’s pretty uncomfortable. But I am learning to be comfortable with discomfort because it has been the secret sauce to my self-development. I think that applies to most people.

I have come to find that success is not some singular event. I have found that true success is found in the struggle. It’s the accumulation of small wins along the way that moves you forward.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am the founder of The Scale Collective. We provide tax reduction planning and support services to small business owners, real estate investors, and high-net-worth individuals.

I started The Scale Collective because I was shocked at how much my small business owner clients paid towards their business and personal taxes. I knew that taxes have a consequential impact on the survival rates of small businesses in the United States, which is currently averaging under 50% over five years. And so, I have made it my mission to help individuals scale their businesses and investment portfolios through strategic tax reduction.

We’ve experienced two considerable challenges in our experience. First, many individuals are blind to the importance of strategic tax planning in scaling their businesses. Many see tax planning as simply planning to pay taxes; They don’t feel there is much they can do to lower their tax bill. The reality is that there are well over 200 tax strategies that businesses and investors can leverage to save money on taxes. Consider that a 10% reduction of their yearly tax bill can have a massive compounding effect on their business growth.

The second challenge is most business owners and investors don’t have a personal relationship with their CPA. They aren’t used to that level of customized attention. I can attribute that to how CPAs are trained to operate transactionally. We’ve all heard about the billable hour. The reality is that most CPAs are so inundated with preparing tax returns that they do not have the time to provide proactive tax advice for their clients.

There is a dire need to educate business owners and investors about what an excellent opportunity tax planning is for their lives and businesses. This is something that the wealthy already know very well. I want to bring those same opportunities to the business community to help them not only survive but flourish.

If I had to describe The Scale Collective in one word, it would be relationships. My ability to develop relationships has always been my most significant business advantage. I work directly with my clients, and I leverage the financial mistakes that I have learned from during my career to connect with my clients on a human level. Vulnerability builds trust, And trust is required in any client-advisor role.

I have also built a strong network of partners, each with whom I have a personal relationship and who provide my client’s complimentary services such as bookkeeping, legal, insurance, compliance, and more.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The great thing about loving South Florida is its diversity. There is something for everyone here.

I love heading to Key Biscayne. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park offers beaches, boating, and the most impressive Miami skyline views in town.

If you love the ocean as much as I do, then a trip to the Florida Keys is a must. We’ll stop at Robbie’s of Islamorada, feed the tarpon, and sip on some margaritas while we watch the sun go down at Sundowners in Key Largo.

If you’re a history buff like me, we’ll definitely want to check out the History Miami Museum and learn about Miami’s rich and colorful history. We can combine history with beautiful views at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

Hollywood Beach is a great place to wind down the day, offering boardwalk restaurants, shops, and free concerts during the week. I personally think that it’s one of the best beaches in America.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so many ups and downs when you are trying to build a successful business. One of the people that I am so grateful for is my wife, Charlotte, I have the support of someone who has encouraged me to follow my dreams. She’s believed in me when I haven’t believed in myself. She’s worked a full-time job and cared for our kids all in support of the vision for our family. I will never be able to repay her for her selflessness but I promise to never stop trying.
