We had the good fortune of connecting with Crystal Sawyer Musician|Educator|Consultant and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Crystal Sawyer, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The company was originally founded by my late father. He suggested that I try the harp after graduating from high school. He saw the amount of performing that I was doing and wanted to streamline operations. In the current day, my business helps me with marketing and branding. It helps people to take me seriously as a professional musician vs a starving artist. There is often a misconception that musicians will willingly perform for free since it is something that we love. I am able to have more of a say in the types of projects that I execute and scheduling is also easier as a solopreneur. There are many resources that are available to a business owner that an individual may not be privy to which helps to move forward. I would encourage anyone with a passion project to turn it into a business.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
New experiences are always just around the corner. No two days in my schedule are exactly the same. There is always a new performance space for me to explore. Different ensembles are formed based on the performance which simply adds to the fun. The stories that people share with me about how they were touched by a performance are always such food for the soul. Sometimes, people approach me in tears because a song brought back a certain memory or there was a moment of being present with a forgetful senior. An important lesson that I have learned within the last few years is the power of mentorship. I would encourage anyone to find a mentor and sit at their feet. The information that someone else that walked a similar path can share is priceless.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hollywood Beach is a nice place to relax under the full moon. The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center has an amazing art gallery, and although Soyka has closed, it used to be my favorite place to eat. There is a gorgeous fountain in Coral Gables that transports you to another time and place. The lounge at Epic Hotel Miami has some of the best views of the bustling city. There is a Polynesian Resort in Fort Lauderdale that serves amazing food during a beautiful dinner show.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Robbin Gordon Cartier is the mentor that I never knew that I needed. If I had children, she would be the godmother. She is a constant source of encouragement, support, and education. Her career has been visited on television as well as in magazines as she has built harp programs for children from the ground to the sky. I would not be where I am now without her guidance.
