We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Bloom and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
When I was little I was all about animals and wanting to be a Wildlife Biologist. I could name several facts about pretty much any animal. But as I got older I found myself steering more towards the creative side of the spectrum. It started when I was in third grade and the show America’s Next Top Model started. I already loved Tyra Banks because of the movie ‘Life Size’ because little girl me thought of her whenever she thought of dolls and being pretty, so my mother and I started watching it. As we watched the show I became fascinated with the world of Fashion and how Glamorous and pretty it was. Getting older I started to fall in love with Music and Dancing which made me start dance lessons. I did dance lessons until I was ten and unfortunately injured my ankle to the point that continuing the dance classes would make it worse so I needed to figure out a new way to express my growing creativity. Flash Forward to middle school my parents took me to see Phantom of the Opera on broadway. After seeing it I started to fall in love with broadway and singing so I joined the Musical Theater Club and Chorus. My love for dancing turned to singing. Once I got into High School that’s when my love for fashion really started. I modeled for the Miami Fashion Board for awhile and in learning more about fashion through my modeling it became my passion and that passion continued to grow. I wasn’t tall enough to model as a career but I knew I had to do something in fashion which is why I decided to get a job in retail as a Sales Associate at my favorite Brand Guess. Through my job I realized a lot more about what’s involved in fashion which grew my interest which brings me to now, going for a Degree in Fashion Styling at the Academy of Art University online and trying to start my career as a Stylist while in school.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m still just starting out and learning with my Styling, what sets me apart from other stylists I would say is just how I feel about it. At work whenever I successfully pick out an outfit that a customer loves the look on the customers face is Art to me and I want to see that from other people but on my terms. I just started my degree for Fashion Styling at the Academy of Art University in February and just getting to this point in general makes me proud of myself. I don’t really have to much art at the moment but I’m adding more and more everyday. As far as what I’m excited for I would say that I’m very excited to just keep learning through my school program and then actually starting to work with clients is something I’m really looking forward to as well. For a long time I was close to giving up because I was starting to think I wouldn’t get anywhere in my life. I went through some traumatic stuff growing up which unfortunately led me to be behind in my life. It was most definitely not easy it took a lot of time but I finally got the help I needed and then starting a job really boosted my confidence in myself and helped me become a completely different person than I was back then. All I did was persevere and keep telling myself that a I can do it and keeping that optimistic out look is what helped me get to where I am today. It took a lot of patience as well as trial and error but it was worth it in the end. Some of the lessons I’ve learned are, well the biggest one is. “Everything Happens for a Reason” I’ve questioned what happened to me for years but if it didn’t happen I wouldn’t be who I am now so I don’t question it so much anymore. Another lesson I’ve learned is that “Patience is a Virtue” I started out as a Sales associate in my job barely making any money and it took way longer than it should have but I kept my cool for the most part and remained patient by telling myself over and over “I will get the promotion” What I want the world to know about me and my story is this “Hey everyone I’m here and I’m ready to make you all feel proud of who you are in your own skin”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Most of my friends already live down here but theoretically. I would say we would definitely spend one day down in Miami exploring the design district which would be new for me as well since I have never gone there but I want to. Also down in Miami There’s Sugar Factory which they have really great drinks as well as food. Another day we would check out a show at the Broward Center for the Performing arts and go to the Museum of discovery and science. Another day we would probably just chill on Hollywood Beach walk the Broadwalk and go to Margaritaville for food and drinks. We would also take a day and go to Bayside. There’s also a Cat Cafe in downtown Ft Lauderdale that we could check out and I would also probably take them to Sawgrass Mills Mall and get something to eat at the Cheesecake Factory or Yard House there. Then at night we would go to places like The Wharf, Roundup and Carousel Club,

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would say that I definitely would like to give a huge shoutout to My parents Melanie and Gary Bloom as well as all of my friends and family especially my grandmother Maxine Uttal. They all have been on my side through the ups and downs. Anything I went through hey were there and they always have supported me no matter what I wanted to do. I also have to thank all of the managers I’ve worked with at Guess in my time there so far because of them I rose up in the ranks from Associate to Management in my job and I would not have been able to do that without them pushing me and teaching me.
