We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Huguet and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michelle, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
To have the freedom to live my life the way I want to. I knew that from a early age; that I never wanted to be told how to schedule my life and do things that I didn’t want to. I’ve always been independent and self-driven person and my work reflects that. There is always something to be done and everyday is different and to me that’s the beauty of being in a creative and artistic career. There is never a dull moment.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My current photography projects deal with city life of Miami as well as the nature within and surrounding it. As I photograph the nature here it allows me to learn first hand what role these native species take in making this climate suitable to live in. By documenting how these plants, trees, and flowers I also document how they could be natural remedies to help myself or others adapt to this environment and be in tune with nature. There is always something going on in Miami so I think it’s important to document it so future generations have the ability to see how life today was like and what are the changes that need to be made for the future.
The road definitely has not been easy but I learned to adapt to these challenges and not let it get in the way of what I want to achieve. I learned to always have multiple back up plans because if anything can go wrong it usually will. Life is like chess, you have to think and plan every move way in advance in order to make sure you win.
My brand is about the greater picture. My work shows that the city life affects nature and vice versa, maybe not immediately but eventually no matter where or who you are. It’s also about enjoying the moment and beauty of the things and people surrounding all of us.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Some of my favorite food spots are Mi Colombia, Locura Marina on Collins, Morton’s Steakhouse, and Taquiza so I would definitely them there for lunch or dinner. For activities; kayaking through the waterways at Oleta to see all the marine life, hiking and camping at Big Cypress, beach day at Haulover, and going to the Frost Museum. To grab a drink and relax definitely the Auld Dubliner and Rusty Pelican.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My best friend, Lorena, and my boyfriend, Alex. They both have been there for me and have supported me throughout the years and I’m grateful to have them in my life.
