We had the good fortune of connecting with Lexx Segarra-Vasquez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lexx, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After certifying as a fitness coach in 2020, I decided to incorporate more nutrition coaching. Through working with clients on the personal training level, I came to realize that more clients struggled with day to day eating, especially my entrepreneur, tech, and mom clients. Everyone always wants to be a little healthier but it takes time to learn new dishes or make lifestyle changes. Not a luxury many of my clients have.
I’ve been plant-based for over 5 years at this point and probably hit many aspects on the spectrum. I’ve been a raw vegan, beginner vegan, a secret vegan, a pescatarian, a fruitarian; and the most important thing I have learned along the way, restrictions suck! You feel bad if you slip and eat the bad thing and you still feel bad if you don’t but obsess over a craving for days. As a nutrition coach, I feel it is important to share knowledge that helps make lifestyle changes and teach better habits, not restrict food that people enjoy through dieting.
I want to use the passion of plant based eating and knowledge of intentional eating and movement to help women feel stronger in their body. I’ve been a gym girlie, certified and all, but unless there is attention to food and intention behind movement, our results just won’t stick. Working with clients in the gym and the kitchen has taught me the Tribe mission is spreading that message – eat well and move intentionally.
I happen to teach mostly through tacos.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Getting here was kind of an “ahaa” moment?! I was talking to my life coach one day, attempting to paint the canvas of life, and together we remembered this passion I had buried away along the blind pursuit of happiness in my corporate career. I started Tribe Training in 2020 to build intentional fitness routines for busy women, but it turned into so much more. What started as personal training turned into building low/mid intensity workout programs and teaching healthy habits that replace restrictive eating.
With Tribe Tacos, I set out to create recipes that are bursting with flavor and packed with plant-based goodness. I love proving that plant-based dishes can be just as flavorful and filling as any other dishes. The recipes use fresh ingredients, most times locally sourced, stretching the imagination of what plant-based tacos can be. What sets me apart from other taco artists? It’s simple – a commitment to making delicious and nutritious food that everyone can enjoy. Whether you’re a vegan, vegetarian, or simply looking for a healthier option, I’ve got something for you. 2022 set the tone when I committed to making 52 different plant-based tacos. From my signature chili verde tacos to the peach cobbler tacos, every recipe is designed to satisfy your cravings and nourish your body.
Tribe Tacos is more than just tacos – it’s a community. I have always believed food has the power to bring people together, and a growing passion about creating a space where everyone feels welcome and valued. The exclusive dinners provide space for many different walks of life and conversation where literally no topic is off limits! The Tribe is made up of diverse and talented individuals who share a common goal – eat well and move intentionally.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My gals love a good “Golden Girl Vacation” when visiting Florida so I think after grabbing a little cafecito somewhere, we would probably set up shop at PS Social for some work during the day since we both work from home. If we aren’t at the beach, I am probably introducing them to anything/everything vegan like burgers from Vegan Junkies, or the best crispy rice and mocktails at Planta, and of course a Caribbean Queen Sushi roll at Love Life Cafe. At night we are probably hitting the dance floor at Red Rooster in Overtown or Daunte’s Hi Fi. Our fave game is to hit up a bar, sit a few seats from each other, and let the fun happen as it may. Between expected flirting with the bartenders to the random conversations with other bar-goers, the night is guaranteed a few hilarious stories!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to send a little credit to my grandmother. She has been one of the biggest influences in my adult life, and I just love her. Jeanie is a saint among us, always making sure we are taking care of, fed, and feeling okay. I guess that is where I get my hospitality from. While she is quite possibly the kindest person I know, Jeanie is from the bronx, quick witted and sharp AF! She has always played a major role in my life, and it seemed as I grew in adulthood and came to know what I wanted to do in life, we only became closer. She is always there cheering me on. In everything I do, I try to be as kind and loving as she is.
